WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ENDS 2009-10 WITH A 76-60 WIN OVER SAGE

Krystina Agard led the Panthers with 27 points while seniors Avery Josey and Carlie Moore combined for 31 points

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team defeated the Sage Gators 76-60 in the Clark Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon to conclude their season and snapped a six game losing streak to improve to 12-13 on the season and 7-11 against the Skyline Conference. Sage fell to 9-15 overall and 7-11 in conference action. Seniors Avery Josey and Carlie Moore played their final game as a Panther on “Senior Day” and the 2nd annual “Pink Out” WBCA Pink Zone game. 

Old Westbury dug itself into a hold in the first half with an eight point deficit (30-22) with 2:57 remaining. Krystina Agard scored six of the Panthers next eight points to knot the game at 30 as both teams went to the lock room at half time. 

The Panthers came out of half time and grabbed a quick 34-30 lead off a pair of scores by Avery Josey. Sage responded with back-to-back layups by Jessica Byerwalters and Kara Hackett to tie the game at 34 all with 18:16 left to play. Old Westbury countered with a 13-2 run, capped off by a layup by Shannon Gilly for an 11 point lead with 13:32 remaining in the second half. Old Westbury increased its lead to as many as 17 points. 

Krystina Agard led Old Westbury with 27 points on 12-of-12 from the line to go with seven assists, four rebounds and two steals. Avery Josey finished the game with 20 points, nine rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals. Shannon Gilly recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds while Carlie Moore scored 11 points. Chutney Burrowes and Abigail Williams contributed with six rebounds each. 

Sage posted three Gators in double figures and were led by Kara Hackett's 18 points. Hackett finished with six rebounds and two steals. Jessica Byerwalters added 17 points, eight rebounds and three steals and Elizabeth Donk tallied 11 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Kelsey Frament helped out with seven rebounds and two blocked shots off the bench.

Old Westbury shot 27-of-67 (40.3%) in the contest, including 17-of-36 (47.2%) in the second half. From three-point range, the Panthers went 4-of-11 (36.4%), making 2-of-6 (33.3%) after the intermission. At the free throw line, the squad went 18-of-20 (90%), with an 8-of-8 (100%) performance in the first. The Panthers converted 19 points off the Gators 22 turnovers and allowed 34 points in the paint. Old Westbury won the boards battle, holding a 42-41 advantage, despite a 17-12 edge by Sage off the offensive glass.
