www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team erased an 8-3 deficit with a five-run outburst in the seventh inning but couldn't hold of the Frostburg State Bobcats in the eighth inning as the Panthers were edged by the final of 10-8 on Saturday afternoon at Owen Fulton Field.
The Bobcats got the scoring started with four runs in the first off Old Westbury starter
Dan Fordyce. Old Westbury responded with a three run second inning. Newcomer
Giovanni Jimenez stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and delivered a single to left center to drive in
Steve Henriquez for Old Westbury's first run.
Albert Bevacqua stroked a single to center to send
Melvin Simmons and
Anthony Fernandez in for the score.
Dan Fordyce allowed four hits in the fifth inning; including a two run homer by Joe Garrity as Frostburg State tacked on four more runs to take an 8-3 lead.
Lefty
Marvin Rosario struck out three in his time on the mound in the sixth and seventh, holding Frostburg State to a pair of singles in the seventh.
Old Westbury tied the game at 8-8 in the seventh inning.
Fernando Lopez drove a sac-fly to left to bring home Albert Bevaqua from third. Two batters later,
Steve Henriquez singled down the right field line to send
Josef Schaetzle in for the score followed by a sacrifice fly by
Ryan Blanco that scored
Emmanuel Mateo.
Robert Moschetto then clubbed a double to bring home Henriquez from first and scored as
Melvin Simmons reached on an error by Bobcat shortstop Daniel Heatwole to knot the game at eight.
Bobcat slugger Joe Garrity capped off a 5-for-5 day with a two-run double in the bottom half of the eighth inning and pinned the loss on freshman
Frank DiMaria.
PANTHERS AT THE PLATE: Albert Bevacqua finished the day 3-for-5 with two RBI off a pair of singles and double and scored one run and swept one bag to lead the Old Westbury offense.
Steve Henriquez was 2-for-4 with two singles and one RBI with two runs scored.
Josef Schaetzle plated a double and scored one run in a 2-for-4 day at the plate while
Emmanuel Mateo hit two singles and scored one run in going 2-for-5.
BOBCATS AT THE PLATE: Joe Garrity had a game-high five hits and five RBI off three doubles and a two run homer. Matt Greene doubled and went 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored while Matt Ridenour hit 2-for-5 with one RBI and scored one run.
PANTHERS ON THE MOUND: Starter
Dan Fordyce pitched five innings, allowing eight runs and three walks while striking out five.
Marvin Rosario fanned three batters in two innings and
Frank DiMaria (0-1) struck out one and surrendered two runs on two hits and two walks in one inning of mound work.
BOBCATS ON THE MOUND: Starter Matt Ridenour lasted only two innings, allowing three runs on two hits and three walks and registered two strikes. Britton Quayle worked the next four innings with three strikeouts and one run on six hits. David O'Brien recorded the first two outs in the seventh but allowed three runs on three hits before Greg Beachy pitched one and a third innings to notch his first victory of the season. Zach O'Dell pitched a perfect ninth with one strikeout to record his first save of the season.
GAME NOTES: Frostburg State held a 6-3 advantage in extra base hits while Old Westbury banged out 13 hits compared to the Bobcats' 12. Old Westbury stole two out of five bags while both teams stranded 10 runners on base. Frostburg State committed two errors as the Panthers were flawless in the field. On the mound, Old Westbury had nine strike outs (Fordyce-5, Rosario-2, DiMaria-1) and issued six walks as Frostburg state struck out six and walked four.
