PANTHER SOFTBALL LOSES DOUBLEHEADER TO NYU-POLY

Panthers fall to Fighting Blue Jays, 5-0 and 11-1 on Sunday

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury softball team was swept by the NYU-Poly Fighting Blue Jays, 5-0 and 11-1, on Sunday at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. Old Westbury fell to 5-7 on the season and 1-3 against the Skyline Conference while NYU-Poly improved to 12-8 and 3-1.

The Panthers fell behind the Fighting Blue Jays in game one after NYU-Poly registered three runs in the second inning due in part to a pair of errors and three hits off starter Deborah Ciccarelli. The fifth innings was the same story as Old Westbury committed one error and one hit that led to a 5-0 deficit.
Shelby Bruns paced the Fighting Blue Jay offense with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate. Bruns finished the game with a double, triple and a stolen base to go along with one run scored and an RBI. Laura Buzzard posted two hits and scored one and drove in one.

Deborah Ciccarelli took the loss for Old Westbury and dipped to 3-5 on the season. She worked seven innings and gave up seven hits and five unearned run and one walk. Her counterpart, Miranda Merrilli took the bat away from Old Westbury. Merilli went the distance, giving up just four hits and sitting eight down on strikes to earn the win.

The Panthers didn't fare any better in the second game. The Panthers fell behind 2-0 before they stepped to the plate in the opening inning. Old Westbury posted their lone run of the day in the bottom of the first when Deborah Ciccarelli drove a single up the middle to score Serina Booth. NYU-Poly scored one in the third and fourth inning that ended starter Alyssa Clancy's outing early. Deborah Ciccarelli worked two innings in relief of Clancy and gave up seven runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks. NYU-Poly exploded for five runs in the sixth inning off one hit and three errors by Old Westbury.

Deborah Ciccarelli led the offense with a pair of single to go 2-for-3 with one RBI. Alyssa Clancy was pinned with the loss for Old Westbury and moved to 2-2 on the season after giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits while NYU-Poly starter Miranda Merill scattered six hits and struck out four to improve to 7-4 on the season.

The Panthers will return to the field on Wednesday, March 31 for a non-conference battle with the St. Joseph's-Brooklyn Bears. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at National Grid Field in Brooklyn, New York.
