PANTHER SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER AT RUTGERS-NEWARK

Nicole Petrucci tied a career-high with three hits in the game two victory

OW recorded season-best 15 hits in game two victory

NEWARK, NJ (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury softball team split a non-conference doubleheader on the road against the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders on Wednesday evening at Alumni Field in Newark, New Jersey. The Scarlet Raiders won the opener, 11-4, and OW took the game two, 5-3. The split moves Old Westbury to 12-14 and Rutgers-Newark to 10-18. 

In game one, Old Westbury scored first with three runs off starter Angela Riscinti in the fourth inning. Sherrida Maxwell connected on a single to score Nicole Mannino, Lauren Isaac and Samantha Siegler. OW starter Deborah Ciccarelli# retired the first nine batters until Amber Affholter led off the fourth with a triple. Two batters later Monica Bagan homered to right center to chop the deficit to one run. Nicole Odell tripled home Tina Aita to tie the game and Ashley Angeli grounded out to second base to score Odell for the go ahead run. 

Rutgers-Newark followed in the fifth innings with five runs. Lauren Isaac doubled to lead off the fifth and scored three batters later off grounder to second base by Kristina Giordano. Rutgers-Newark added on two more runs in the sixth to secure the victory. 

Lauren Isaac led the OW offensive with a 3-for-3 game including two runs scored. Alyssa Clancy went 2-for-3 and Sherrida Maxwell was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Amber Affholter paced Rutgers-Newark with three runs scored in going 3-for-4. Tina Aita and Nicole Odell also collected three hits each. 

Deborah Ciccarelli took the loss for Old Westbury and fell to 5-10 and was charged with four earned runs on 11 hits and two walks while whiffing two. Angela Riscinti improved to 7-9 and struck out six batters and allowed two earned runs on eight hits without a walk. 

In game two, Old Westbury scored in the first inning off a double by Lauren Isaac that brought home Sherrida Maxwell. Deborah Ciccarelli lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to score Alyssa Clancy in the third inning. The Panthers added three more run in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. Alyssa Clancy's scoreless streak ended at 30 innings when Rutgers-Newark scored one run in the fourth inning. Monica Bagan clubbed a two-run triple in the sixth but wasn't enough for Rutgers-Newark. 

Nicole Petrucci collected a game-high three hits and finished 3-for-5 with one run scored. Alyssa Clancy, Samantha Siegler, Nicole Mannino and Jessica Spero each had two hits. Clancy had three RBI and Sherrida Maxwell scored two runs. Amber Affholter and Monica Liotta stroked two hits each to lead Rutgers-Newark. 

Alyssa Clancy improved to 6-3 with a complete game outing. She scattered eight hits and gave up three runs and fanned six. Samantha Veneziano was pinned with the loss for Rutgers-Newark, going the distance and giving up five runs off 15 hits and one walk. 

The Panthers will remain on the road for a Skyline Conference doubleheader with the St. Joseph's-L.I. Golden Eagles on Saturday, April 17 in Patchogue, New York. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
