PANTHER SOFTBALL EARNS SPLIT WITH FARMINGDALE STATE

Old Westbury wins first game 4-3, suffers 9-5 setback in second

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury softball team scored four runs in the first game to slip past Farmingdale State 4-3 in the opener as Alyssa Clancy took the complete game win to notch her eighth victory of the season. In game two, Farmingdale State edged Old Westbury 4-3 in extra base hits en route to a 9-5 victory for the Skyline Conference split on Sunday afternoon at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. Old Westbury stands at 13-15 overall and 5-5 against the Skyline Conference with the split while Farmingdale State moves to 21-9 and 8-2. 

Jessica Spero score the eventual winning run in the fourth inning reaching on a two-out single and scored two batters later off a throwing error by Farmingdale State pitcher Heather Buckshaw. Old Westbury jumped out to an early 3-0 lead at the end of the opening frame off two errors and just one hit. Deborah Ciccarelli drew a bases loaded walk to score Nicole Petrucci followed by an error by shortstop Nicole Farber that added runs by Alyssa Clancy and Ciccarelli.

Farmingdale State got on the board in the sixth inning as Aubrey Walker singled to right field to score Kaitlin Keenan and an error by Kristina Giordano allowed Rebecca Richman. The Rams tacked on one more run in the seventh off a double by Richman that plated in Shelby Martin.

Alyssa Clancy improved to 8-3 on the season with another dazzling performance, despite scattering a career-high nine hits and gave p three runs (two earned). Clancy fanned six Rams and didn't issue any free passes. Heather Buckshaw went the distance suffering the tough-luck loss for Farmingdale State, giving up four hits, walking three and striking out eight Panthers. Jessica Spero had two of thos hits for the Panthers finishing the game as the only OW player to log a multi-hit game. Aubrey Walker and Rebecca Richman paced Farmingdale State with two hits each.

In game two, Farmingdale State responded with a four-run first inning on four hits off OW starter Deborah Ciccarelli. Old Westbury countered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to cut the deficit. Deborah Ciccarelli stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and reached base on an error by shortstop Nicole Farber to score Nicole Petrucci and Alyssa Clancy.

Farmingdale State added three more in the second off four hits and an error to take a 7-2 lead. Old Westbury answered back with a run in the bottom of the second to score Jessica Spero off an infield single by Alyssa Clancy.

Old Westbury added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Lauren Isaac drew a bases loaded walk to score Sherrida Maxwell in the fourth and Nicole Petrucci crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the fifth. Farmingdale State also added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth frames to build a 9-5 lead.

Nicole Petrucci collected two hits and scored two runs and Sherrida Maxwell, Alyssa Clancy and Jessica Spero joined her in the multi-hit department. Both Petrucci and Maxwell doubled while Spero tripled for Old Westbury's extra base hits. Kaitlan Keenan was one of three Rams with multi-hits, finishing with a 4-for-4 game at the plate with three RBI and two runs including a two run double in the second and jacked a solo shot in the sixth.

Deborah Ciccarelli whiffed two Rams and suffered the setback for Old Westbury and moved to 5-12 on the season. Ciccarelli gave up nine runs (eight earned) on 13 hits and two walks. Lauren Fitzpatrick improved to 4-0 on the season pitching five innings and was tapped for five runs (four earned) on nine hits and five walks with three strikeouts. Heather Buckshaw worked the sixth and seventh innings, allowing one hit and two strikeouts to preserve the victory.

The Panthers will return to the field for a non-conference affair with the New Rochelle Blue Angels on Tuesday, April 20 at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is slated for 4:30 p.m. in Old Westbury, New York.
