PANTHER BASEBALL FALLS TO #21 RPI

Old Westbury out-hit the Engineers, 9-8, in a 6-2 loss

TROY, NY (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team lost a 6-2 decision on the road at No. 21 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Friday afternoon at Robinson Field in Troy, New York. The loss snapped Old Westbury's seven game win streak and them to 9-9 on the season while the Engineers improved to 11-5.

The Engineers jumped on the scoreboard first as they scored one run in the third inning. Noah Poissant III doubled to right center to lead off the inning and scored two batters later when Tom Jebb grounded out to Melvin Simmons at shortstop to knock him in. Rensselaer scored again in the fifth inning when Marvin Rosario walked Tom Jebb with the bases loaded to score Andrew Krushelnyski. Rosario did how ever get out the bases loaded jam by striking out Josh Brooks followed by a pop out by Billy Nikolksi.

Old Westbury tied the game in the sixth, posting two runs in the frame. Giovanni Jimenez lifted a one out solo homerun to left field to put Old Westbury on the board. Back-to-back singles by Albert Bevacqua and Josef Schaetzle put runners in scoring position for Edwin Pena, who drove in Bevacqua off a grounder to RPI pitcher Andrew Mondo.

RPI scored one run in the seventh to take a 3-2. Josh Brooks reached on an error by second baseman Albert Bevacqua that allowed Noah Poissant III to score from third. The Engineers manufactured three more runs in the eighth to secure the 6-2 win. After Patrick Reardon was hit by the pitch by Abel Guerrero to lead off the inning, he stole second. Camden Mamigonia then doubled to center field to score Reardon. William Campbell was called on for relief work and surrendered a two-run shot to left field by Jonny Rio to close out the scoring.

Old Westbury starter Marvin Rosario was pinned with his first loss of the season after yielding three runs (two earned) on six hits in 6.2 innings of mound work. Rosario issued two walks and fanned four batters. Abel Guerrero for 2/3 of an inning and was charged with two runs on one hit. William Campbell didn't have his best stuff on the hill as hill, giving up a homerun followed by a walk before Jorge Hiraldo was called on to record the final two outs.

Andrew Mondo picked up his fourth win of the season for RPI after throwing nine strong innings and allowing two runs on nine hits with no walks and four strikeouts.

Giovanni Jimenez led the Panthers at the plate after going 2-for-4 and clubbed his second homer of the season. Joe Manzella doubled and hit 2-for-4 while Edwin Pena went 2-for-4 with an RBI and stole one bag.

Jonny Rio paced the Engineers by going 2-for-4 with a two-run homerun. Noah Poissant III (2-for-2) also collected two hits with the home squad.

The Panthers will return to the field for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 3 in a non-conference affair with the Plattsburgh State Cardinals. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex in Old Westbury, New York.
