OLD WESTBURY, NY (
www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team defeated the Staten Island Dolphins, 7-3, on Tuesday evening at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. The win improved the Panthers to 15-16 on the season while the Dolphins slip to 23-9.
What started out to be a pitchers duel after the first 15 batters were retired, Old Westbury's
Ali Ferreiras stroked a single for the games first hit followed by a bunt single by
Euris Turbi. Two batters later
Jason Kondra reached on an error by second basemen Henry Roman, which scored Ferreiras.
Joe Manzella then singled down the right field line to score Turbi and Kondra.
Giovanni Jimenez doubled to move Manzella over to third and
Albert Bevacqua singled through the left side to send Manzella home. Jimenez scored when
Josef Schaetzle reached on an error by short stop Mark Glennerster to cap the five run third inning.
Old Westbury tacked on two more in the fifth when
Ali Ferreiras clubbed a two run double down the left field line with two outs to close out Old Westbury's scoring.

Bobby Hugli brought his no-hitter into the sixth inning and lost it against the first batter, Tom DeWaters, who singled. Steve Hession followed with a single and Devon DiCasoli flied out to right field to send DeWarters in for Staten Island's first run. Two batters later Pat Gale lifted a sacrifice fly to center where
Jason Kondra made an outstanding fully extended catch as Hession and DiCasoli tagged and scored.
Ali Ferreiras and
Joe Manzella led the Panthers with two, hits, two RBI and a run scored.
Albert Bevacqua stole two bags and went 1-for-3 with an RBI and scored one run. Henry Roman singled twice and scored once while Pat Gale plated a pair of runs to pace the Dolphins.
Bobby Hugli improved to 2-1 on the season with his first career complete game outing. Hugli registered three strikeouts with no walks while surrendering three runs on four hits. James Mardikos struck out three and took the loss for Staten Island to drop his record to 1-3. Mardikos ws tapped for seven runs (three earned) on 10 hits and four walks in seven innings. Richard Anderson pitched a hitless eighth inning in relief of Mardikos.
The Panthers will return to the diamond for a non-conference affair with the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners on Wednesday, April 21 in Old Westbury, New York. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m. at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
