PANTHER BASEBALL SWEEPS NON-CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER

Albert Bevacqua went 5-for-6 with six RBI and three runs scored in Saturday's doubleheader

Panthers down St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn 10-1 and 18-1 in a Saturday twin bill

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team swept its doubleheader with the St. Joseph's-Brooklyn Bears on Saturday, 10-1 in the opener and earning an 18-1 victory in game two. The sweep improved Old Westbury to 19-16 for the year, while St. Joseph's-Brooklyn dropped to 8-19. 

Combined, Old Westbury collected 28 hits, including four doubles and two triples, while limiting St. Joseph's-Brooklyn to 11 hits and two runs in the doubleheader sweep.

In game one, Marvin Rosario worked his second consecutive complete game outing on just six hits in a 10-1 Old Westbury victory. The lefty improved to 5-1 on the season and fanned seven batters with just one walk. Danny Contant took the loss for St. Joseph's-Brooklyn, moving his record to 0-4. Contant pitched four innings and was tapped for 10 runs (seven earned) on nine hits and three walks.
Offensively, the Panthers rapped out 10 hits in the contest including a double by Josef Schaetzle and a triple by Bladimir Toribio.

Individually, Albert Bevacqua and Josef Schaetzle both finished 3-for-4. Bevacqua hit three singles, drove in three runs and scored one while Schaetzle clubbed his 11th double of the season and drove in a run. Giovanni Jimenez (2-for-4) and Euris Turbi both drove in a pair of runs while Jimenez, Jason Kondra and Melvin Simmons all scored twice. Jimenez also stole two bags. Alvaro Quinones paced the Bears with two hits including a triple and one run scored.

Old Westbury jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first inning as Giovanni Jimenz singled home Jason Kondra to break into the scoring column. Albert Bevacqua followed with a single that scored #Melvin Simmons and Jimenez. Old Westbury added three more runs in the second frame to break open the contest in addition to four runs in the fourth to earn the victory.

Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the first, Old Westbury's Jason Kondra led off with a single and stole second and followed by a score as Melvin Simmons singled him home to tie the game. Two batters later, Josef Schaetzle recorded his 12th double of the season and drove in his 32nd and 33rd RBI's to put the Panthers ahead for good, 3-1. Old Westbury's offensive assault continued as they scored four in the second, three in the third, two in the fourth and six more in the fifth.

Ali Ferreiras led the offense with three hits and drove in one and scored one. Jason Kondra, Albert Bevacqua, Josef Schaetzle, Ronald Petito and Anthony Fernandez paired hits for Old Westbury in the win. Kondra and Melvin Simmons each scored three runs while Bevacqua, Edwin Pena, Petito and Fernandez scored two runs. Alvaro Quinones led the Bears with a double and went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Ryan Jarvis picked up his fourth win of the season with seven solid innings of work. The sophomore allowed an unearned run on five hits. He struck out six and walked one. Chris Coffey dropped to 0-4 on the year and was rocked for 12 runs (10 earned) on 13 hits and five walks and exited after working four innings.

The Panthers return to action on Sunday, April 25th for “Senior Day” against the Stevens Ducks at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. Prior to first pitch, seniors Tom Benedetto, Albert Bevacqua, William Campbell, Dan Fordyce, Bobby Hugli, Joe Manzella and Robert Moschetto will be honored for their dedication to Old Westbury Baseball. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. in Old Westbury, New York.
