www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to slip past SUNY College at Old Westbury 6-5 Wednesday in Hoboken, New Jersey at Dobbelaar Field, eliminating the Panthers from the ECAC Metro Region Championship Quarterfinal. Old Westbury finished the season with a 22-22 record while Stevens (21-18) advances to the semifinal round scheduled for Saturday, May 5.
The Panthers seemed to be in the driver's seat for the game, holding a 5-3 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning. The Ducks put three runs on the scoreboard on four hits to claim the win.
Old Westbury opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Melvin Simmons and
Giovanni Jimenez went back-to-back with singles and
Albert Bevacqua reached on a fielder's choice to put Simmons on third.
Josef Schaetzle grounded out to first to score Simmons and three batters later Bevacqua scored before
Ali Ferreiras was picked off to put OW up 2-0.
The Ducks added three runs in the fourth. Tom Phillips lead off with a double to center field and Denis Ackerman walked to set up a three-run homer by Russ Grimes to put Stevens ahead 3-2.
Old Westbury added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to reclaim a 4-3 lead.
Joel Santos reached base on a free pass with two outs and stole second before advancing to third off a
Jason Kondra single. Santos then scored on a throwing error to tie the game at three.
Giovanni Jimenez then scored on a double to left center by
Ali Ferreiras in the sixth to grab the lead.
The Panthers tacked on their fifth run in the ninth frame for the 5-3 advantage.
Ali Ferreiras reached on an error, stole second and advanced on a throwing error by catcher Dennis Ackerman.
Anthony Fernandez lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Ferreiras.
James Huber returned to the mound for his second inning of relief in the ninth and gave up a single to Mark Rasulo and scored three batters later when T.J. Alcorn stroked a single. Corey Linden followed with sacrifice fly that tied the game at five when Russ Grimes scored. Anthony Andrews laced the game winning single to center field that scored Ken Meerendonk to putt Stevens in front 6-5, to end Old Westbury's season.
Senior
Bobby Hugli started on the mound for Old Westbury and worked 6.2 innings. Hugli before
Abel Guerrero recorded a groundout to escape out of the seventh inning.
James Huber was dealt his first loss of the season and fell to 4-1 after surrendering three runs on five hits and a walk in 1.2 innings. Joe Finora picked up the win for Stevens to improve to 7-3 on the season. Finora gave up three earns runs on 11 hits and two walks while tossing four strikeouts in the complete game victory.
For the Panthers,
Ali Ferreiras went 3-for-4 with a double to pace the offense.
Anthony Fernandez and
Giovanni Jimenez slapped two singles each. Russ Grimes went 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI, two runs scored and a pair of walks to lead Stevens while Mark Rasulo and Corey Linden each collected a pair of hits.
