PANTHER BASEBALL DEFEATED BY STEVENS ON SENIOR DAY, 10-3

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team hosted the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks on Wednesday evening for Senior Day at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. Stevens scored six runs between the fourth and fifth innings and nine runs overall to defeat the Panthers 10-3 on Wednesday evening in Old Westbury, New York. The loss moved Old Westbury to 22-19 on the season while the Ducks improved to 18-18.

The Panthers, playing their final home contest of the season, allowed three hits over the first three innings to Stevens, but the Ducks posted four runs on three hits and an error to grab a 4-0 lead. Russ Grimes put Stevens on the board with a solo shot over the left field fence. Five batters later, Anthony Andrews doubled down the left field line to knock in three Ducks.

Stevens added two more runs in the fifth inning off Russ Grimes' second homer of the game to left center that scored T.J. Alcorn.

Old Westbury responded in the sixth frame with two runs to cut the deficit. Jason Kondra and Melvin Simmons singled to start the inning followed by a base knock by Giovanni Jimenez that sent Kondra across home plate for OW's first run. Two batters later, Josef Schaetzle delivered a single up the middle to score Simmons for the second run.

Stevens added a single run in the eighth off a T.J. Alcorn single and a two more runs in the ninth on a double by Corey Linden and a single by Anthony Andrews.

Old Westbury tacked on a run in the bottom of the ninth. Jason Kondra grounded to second base to score Joe Manzella from third for OW's final run.

Skyline Conference Pitcher of the Year, Marvin Rosario (6-3), suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs off eight hits in five innings of mound work. Frank DiMaria, Kevin Briffa, Bobby Hugli and William Campbell each logged an inning of relief on the hill. Mark Poinsett improved to 4-0 for Stevens, allowing two runs on 10 hits in 5.2 innings of work.

Four Panthers registered multiple hits as Jason Kondra, Melvin Simmons, Giovanni Jimenez and Euris Turbi# paced Old Westbury's offensive attack. Anthony Andrews collected four RBI for Stevens and went 5-for-6 at the plate. Russ Grimes added a pair of homers in a 3-for-3 day with three RBI and three runs scored while T.J. Alcorn, Denis Ackermann and Mike Pagliaro each had two hits. 

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, May 8 for a non-conference affair with the Keystone Giants in La Plume, Pennsylvania. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m. at the Christy Mathewson Field.
