www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team increased its win streak to four after defeating the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins 73-56 at home in Skyline Conference action Thursday evening at the Clark Athletic Center. The win improves OW to 11-3 on the season and 7-2 in conference play, while MSV slips to 6-8 and 4-6, respectively.
Old Westbury jumped out to an early 10-2 lead to open the game at the 15:23 mark off a layup by
Kim Weathers. Over the next 10:17, Mount Saint Vincent put together a 15-2 run to take a 17-12 lead with 4:40 remaining on the first half clock. OW responded by scoring nine of the next 14 points over the final 4:30 to cut the deficit, heading into the half down, 25-21.
Kim Weathers scored six of OW's eight points out of the second half gates to knot the game at 29 all with 16:27 remaining. MSV's Andree DeLeon responded with a 5-0 run to put the Dolphins back up by five (34-29). Old Westbury countered with a 20-14 run of which Weathers poured in 10 points as the Panthers took a 49-48 lead with 6:03 left on the clock. Following a an ejection by MSV's head coach Gerald Davis, Old Westbury closed out the game on a 23-8 run en route to the 73-56 victory.
Weathers erupted for 25 of her game high 29 points in the second half and finished the night hitting 10-of-19 from the floor and 9-of-11 from the charity stripe to go along with six steals, six rebounds and four assists.
Ruth Vargas combined 14 points and 13 rebounds (eight offensive) in 26 minutes of court time off the bench to register her first career double-double.
Brittany Jones followed with 10 points, eight boards and four steals while
Abigail Williams had a game-high three swats.
Kerry O'Conner scored 17 points to lead Mount Saint Vincent. Andree DeLeon (16 points) and Sarah Lith (12) registered double-digit points and Kara McNish cleaned 10 boards off the glass followed by Andrea Sinaly's eight.
Old Westbury outshot Mount Saint Vincent 37 percent (27-73) to 28.8 percent (17-59) from the field and 73.9 percent (17-23) from the free throw line, compared to the Dolphins' 68 percent (17-25) effort. OW edged MSV in the rebounding department, 46-43, including 19-17 off the offensive glass that turned into 14 Panther second chance points. Old Westbury also turned 28 Dolphin miscues into 25 points and dominated the paint by outscoring MSV 44-19 in the low block.
BARD RAPTORS UP NEXT FOR WEATHERS AND THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the court on Saturday (Jan. 22), taking on the Bard Raptors in a Skyline Conference battle in Old Westbury, New York. Game time is set to tip at 4 p.m. from the Clark Athletic Center.
