www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team suffered a 59-49 setback Saturday at home when the visiting Mount Saint Mary Knights defeated the Panthers in Skyline Conference action. Old Westbury moves to 12-4 overall and 8-3 in conference play while MSM improves to 17-2 and 13-0, respectively.
Old Westbury fell behind early as Mount Saint Mary jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead. OW battled back to close within one when
Kim Weathers dropped in a layup to make the game 9-8. MSM outscored OW 21-10 from 13:32 to 1:26 to build up a 12 point lead (30-12) into the locker room at halftime.
Kim Weathers' free throw at 18:55 made it 30-21; the closest OW would get as MSM outscored the Panthers 31-29 in the second half. The Knights extended the lead to as many as 19 (49-30) with 6:55 remaining in the second half.
DeAndra Scott poured in a career-high 17 points to lead the way for Old Westbury. Scott also grabbed five offensive boards while
Deslyn Applewhaite added 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting and
Kim Weathers totaled 11 points, five rebounds and four steals.
Ruth Vargas chipped in with seven rebounds and four steals.
Amanda Horvers paced Mount Saint Mary with 18 points while Jen Mocanu (16 points) and Kate Hartnett (11 points) joined her in double figures. Hartnett added 10 boards (game-high) to compete her double-double.
Old Westbury pressured Mount Saint Mary into 33 turnovers while OW's 29 miscues resulted in 28 points for the visitors. MSM edged OW in rebounding, 38-34 while outshooting the Panthers 37.8 percent (17-45) to 32.8 percent (19-58) from the field.
YESHIVA MACCABEES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the court on Tuesday (Feb. 3), taking on Yeshiva Maccabees in a Skyline Conference battle at home in Old Westbury. Game time is set to tip at 8 p.m. from the Clark Athletic Center.
