OW’S FOUR GAME WIN-STREAK SNAPPED AS RAMS TOP WOMEN’S HOOPS, 87-60

(www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team started out slow and put the Panthers in too deep a hole against the Farmingdale State Rams in a 87-60 loss on Thursday at home in Skyline Conference action. OW's four game losing streak was snapped and now move to 7-3 on the season and 3-2 in conference play as Farmingdale States improves to 7-3 and 5-1, respectively.

Farmingdale State jumped out to a quick 11-0 lead with 17:24 remaining in the first half until Kim Weathers made one of two from the line to put OW on the board. Moments later, Shemique Hooks scored a layup to give Farmingdale State a 22-7 lead at 11:19. The Panthers never led but came within eight in the first half. Back-to-back treys by Weathers and Denise Zajonc and a made free-throw by Brittany Jones cut the deficit down to eight, 22-14 with 9:38 left in the first half. Farmingdale State responded with a 25-7 run to close out the opening half, taking a 26 point lead into the break.

The Rams once again started off the half with a huge run, stretching their lead to 35 on a 15-6 spurt with 14:15 left on the second half clock. Dominque Cunningham knocked down a jumper at 12:47 to give Farmingdale State a 36-point lead (65-29), its largest lead of the game.

OW's Kim Weathers scored a game-high 23 points to go along with five steals, five rebounds and four assists. Denise Zajonc added 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor including four triples in 23 minutes off the bench. Brittany Jones chipped in with seven rebounds and three steals.

Juanuta Chappel finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and five steals for the Rams, followed by Nikita Green's 12 points and game-high five assists. Lushanta Savadel pulled-down 10 boards (game-high), including seven off the offensive glass.

The Panthers shot 26.7 percent from the floor (20-75) and 33.3 percent from deep (7-21). The Rams connected at 44.8 percent from the field (30-67) and 21.4 percent from three-point land (3-14).Farmingdale State also edged Old Westbury in rebounds, 54-40. Both teams combined for 64 turnovers while OW's 33 resulted in 38 points scored for Farmingdale State.

SAGE GATORS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the court on Saturday (Jan. 8), taking on the Sage Gators in a Skyline Conference battle in Old Westbury, New York. Game time is set to tip at 2 p.m. from the Clark Athletic Center.
