MEN’S SOCCER ELIMINATED FROM SKYLINE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP

Panthers closed 2011 season with 6-12-1 overall record

(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – – The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's soccer team saw its season come to an end on Saturday afternoon as the fifth-seeded Panthers were defeated by the fourth-seeded Sage Gators 7-1 in the opening round of the Skyline Conference Championship Tournament in Troy, New York.   With Saturday's loss, the Panthers finished their season at 6-12-1 overall, while the Gators improved to 11-6-1 with the win and will advance to a Skyline Conference semifinal matchup against top-seeded St. Joseph's-L.I. on Wednesday afternoon in Patchogue, New York. 

Sage opened the scoring in the 21st minute as Gustavo Trinidad took a pass from Pat Noonan and found the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.  The Gators added to their advantage moments later as Wesley Finch connected for his 11th goal of the season and a 2-0 lead in the 24th minute.  Finch's goal was assist by Noonan, his second of the game.  Chris Midelowski scored in the 38th minute as Chris Catania earned the assist to put Sage up 3-0 at half time. 

Sage opened the second half with goals in the 51st (Pat Noonan) and 54th minutes (Gustavo Trinidad) to take a commanding 5-0 lead.  The Panthers struck in the 63rd minute when Steven Burgos gathered the ball and laced a shot past Sage goalkeeper Trevor Paddy for his second goal of the year.  The goal was setup by George Villalta, who was credited with his second assist of the year.   The Gators added to their advantage with goals in the 74th (Tyler Denton) and 83rd (Gustavo Trinidad) minutes. 

Pablo Diaz made eight saves in defeat for Old Westbury, while Trevor Paddy stopped three shots in goal for Sage.  Overall, Sage finished with a 23-9 advantage in shots, including a 15-4 edge on-goal.  The Gators also close the game with a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. 

Seniors Andrew Puca, German Parodis and George Villalta played in their final match as an Old Westbury Panther.
