WOMEN’S HOOPS DOOMED BY POOR SECOND HALF SHOOTING IN 73-59 LOSS TO GENESEO

Panthers look ahead to Tuesday’s non-conference showdown at Brooklyn

OLD WESTBURY, NY
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team shot just 25.6 percent from the floor in the second half, making just 10 of 39 shots, as the Panthers lost 73-59 Sunday afternoon to the visiting Geneseo Blue Knights in the Clark Athletic Center.  OW falls to 0-2 on the season while Geneseo improved to 2-0. 

Despite a slow start, Old Westbury went on a 14-0 run to make the score 18-0 with 11:42 remaining on the first-half clock after being down by five points.  Old Westbury was outscored 24-19 over the final 10:11 and went into the half with a 35-33 lead.   

Both teams would battle early in the second half, with Old Westbury scoring the first five points to take a 39-33 lead at 19:11.  After a four lead changes, Geneseo's Katie Peterson dropped in a layup at 11:01 to put the Blue Knights ahead, 48-47 as they went on a 27-10 run over the final 11:01 to close out the game.

Kim Weathers led Old Westbury with 17 points and four steals in 31minutes of action off the bench.  Antoinette Jolly followed with a12 points on 6-of-8 shooting to go along with eight rebounds (five offensive) and three steals.  Clarissa Gallagher knocked down three triples and finished with a career-high nine points.  Deslyn Applewhaite ha a team –high four assists.  Applewhaite and Myajha Elston both pulled-down eight boards while Elston added three steals.  Ruth Vargas and DeAndra Scott chipped in with three and two blocks, respectively.   

Melissa Graham led the way for Geneseo with 19 points to go along with eight rebounds, six assists, three steals and two blocks.  Kately Charbonneau (13 points), Lea Sobeiraski (12 points) and Bri Dunton (10 points) followed with double-digit performances.  Dunton added a game-high seven assists and Shannon McGinnnis ripped down 12 points, to lead all rebounders. 

Geneseo outshot Old Westbury from the field 36.8 percent (28-76) to 35.2 percent (25-71).  Geneseo knocked down 11-of-19 from the free throw line while Old Westbury hit 3-of-8.  Geneseo also enjoyed a 50-39 rebounding advantage, including 26-17 off the offensive glass, resulting in 21 second chance points.  Old Westbury forced Geneseo into 21 turnovers which results into 18 points for OW. 

BROOKLYN BULLDOGS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the hardwood on Tuesday (Nov. 22) for a non-conference road battle against the Brooklyn Bulldogs in Brooklyn, New York. Game time is set to tip at 5:30 from the West Quad Center.
