www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team suffered its first loss of the season as the Brooklyn Bulldogs proved to be too much for the visiting Panthers in a 101-86 win on Tuesday night in the West Quad Center. Old Westbury is now 1-1 on the season while Brooklyn improves to 3-1.
Brooklyn led wire-to-wire and jumped out to an early 12-3 lead with 15:13 on a three-pointer by Amil John. Old Westbury tied the game twice in the first half, at 6:03 and 5:09. Brooklyn held a 45-39 lead at the half despite Old Westbury shooting 44.1 percent from the field (15-34) and 41.2 percent from three-point territory (7-17).
Old Westbury opened the second half with an 11-6 run to pull within one point, 51-50, with 17:29 remaining. Brooklyn used a 33-15 run over the next 9:53 to take a commanding 84-65 lead, their largest of the game.
Jamal Little hit 9-of-18 and made four three-pointers and scored a team-high 24 points to go with seven rebounds, while
Kerel Mitchell scored 21 points and nabbed three steals. Off the bench,
Rashawn McCarthy added 16 points, seven rebounds and a game-high six assists and
Curtis Leslie added 11 points.
Rob Sanders chipped in with nine rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Tyshawn Russell led three other Brooklyn players that reached double-figures with 34 points. Keiran Halton grabbed a game-high 10 boards followed by Amil John's nine. Kavon Baker added a game-best two blocks.
Old Westbury finished at 42.9 percent (33-77) from the field, 37.1 percent from three-point range (13-35) and 46.7 percent from the free-throw line (7-15). Brooklyn used a red-hot second half to finish at 49.3 percent (35-71), 43.8 percent (7-16) from beyond the arc and 80 percent (24-30) from the charity stripe. The Bulldogs won the battle of the boards, 45-41, while Old Westbury's held a 16-14 edge off the offensive glass, resulting in12 second chance points. Brooklyn also forced 20 turnovers and had a 20-15 advantage in points off turnovers.
NYU VIOLETS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the hardwood on Sunday (Nov. 27) for a non-conference battle against the NYU Bobcats in New York, New York. Game time is set to tip at 3 p.m. from Jerome S. Coles Sports Center.
