NYU SHUTS DOWN MEN’S BASKETBALL, 91-67

Four Panthers registered double-digit scoring in road defeat

NEW YORK, NY
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) –  The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team dropped a 91-67 non-conference decision to the NYU Violets at the Jerome S. Coles Sports Center on Sunday afternoon.  Old Westbury's record dropped to 1-2 on the season, while NYU improved to 3-0.

After Kyle Stockmal's three-pointer gave NYU an early 3-0 lead, Old Westbury responded with an 8-0 run which including a pair of triples from Kerel Mitchell to give the Panthers their largest lead of the game. Moments later, Carle Yaffe dropped in a layup to make it 12-11, giving NYU the lead for good with 13:19 remaining on the first half clock. NYU overwhelmed OW the rest of the half, finishing with a 31-14 run over the final 12:31 to lead 43-25 at the break.   

Trailing by 18 points at halftime, after shooting 29.7 percent from the field in the opening half, the Panthers improved their shooting to 38.9 percent but were outscored 48-42 over the final 20 minutes.  NYU opened the second-half with a 14-4 run over the opening 3:17 to extend the lead to 28, 57-29.  NYU went up by as many as 34 points en route to defeating Old Westbury. 

Kerel Mitchell and Rashawn McCarthy led the Panthers with 13 points, while Tavon McNair had 12 and Matthew Duffy added 10.  Curtis Leslie had eight rebounds and Duffy registered a career-high five steals to lead Old Westbury.  Dayshawn Long chipped in with six assists and three steals. 

NYU's Carl Yaffe led the team with 21 points followed by Kyle Stockmal, Andy Stein and Zeve Sanderson who registered 13, 11 and 10 points, respectively.  Stein pulled down a game-high 10 boards and Yaffe rejected three shots. 

NYU shot a blistering 56.9 percent (33-58) from the field and hit 12 of 26 three-point attempts.  Old Westbury shot just 34.2 percent (25-73) from the field.  The Panthers scored 18 points off of turnovers, forcing 19 turnovers.  NYU won the boards battle, holding a 49-35 advantage off the glass.    

YESHIVA MACCABEES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the hardwood on Thursday (Dec. 1) when they transition into Skyline Conference action on the road against the Yeshiva Maccabees in New York, New York.  Game time is set to tip at 8 p.m. from the Furst Gymnasium.
