KEREL MITCHELL POSTS CAREER-HIGH IN 84-66 ROUT OF YESHIVA

Kerel Mitchell scored a career-high 24 points in an 84-66 pasting of Yeshiva in a Skyline Conference opener Thursday night

NEW YORK, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) –  The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team won its second straight Skyline Conference opener with a 84-66 pasting of the Yeshiva Maccabees inside Furst Gymnasium on the road Thursday evening.  Old Westbury improves to 2-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference action while sending Yeshiva's record to 0-6 and 0-2, respectively. 

Old Westbury led wire-to-wire to notch their conference second straight conference opening victory over Yeshiva.  Kerel Mitchell drained a pair of three-pointers to give Old Westbury an early 15-4 lead with 17:13 remaining on the first-half clock.  Yeshiva cut the deficit to single-digits when Arman Davtian converted a three-point play to make it 15-7.  Rashawn McCarthy sank a jumper at 16:20 to give Old Westbury 17-7 advantage.  Old Westbury led by double-figures for the remaining 36:20.  Old Westbury used a 23-8 run to increase its lead to 25, 40-15, with 8:36 remaining on the first-half clock.  Old Westbury took a 45-28 lead into the locker room.

Old Westbury lead by as many as 27 points, when Jamal Little dropped in a layup with 6:04 remaining in the second half to make it 77-50.   

Kerel Mitchell poured in a career-high 24 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor including 5-of-10 from beyond the arc and 5-of-5 from the free-throw stripe to go along with six rebounds.  Rob Sanders and Tavon McNair both registered 14 points while Sanders pulled down six boards.  Jamal Little chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds off the bench.   Matthew Duffy nabbed a game-high three steals.

Dovie Hoffman led the Maccabees with 14 points and nine rebounds.  Arman Davtian followed with 11 points and two blocks while Shlomo Weissberg scored 10 points off the bench. 

OW shot a blistering 50.8 percent (31-61) from the field and hit 10-of-23 three-point attempts.  Yeshiva shot 43.6 percent (24-55) from the field.  The Panthers scored 17 points off of turnovers, forcing 14 turnovers.  Yeshiva won the boards battle, holding a 34-32 advantage off the glass.   

SAGE GATORS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the hardwood on Saturday (Dec. 3) when they continue Skyline Conference play against the Sage Gators in Old Westbury, New York.  Game time is set to tip at 4 p.m. inside the Clark Athletic Center.
