WOMEN’S HOOPS PICK UP 94-39 ROAD WIN AT MEDGAR EVERS

Panthers earn first victory of season; OW returns home for conference opener against Sage on Saturday

BROOKLYN, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team led start to finish Wednesday evening in non-conference road action, defeating the Medgar Evers Cougars, 94-39, inside Cougar Cave.  The Panthers improve to 1-3 on the year, while Medgar Evers drops to 0-6.  

Old Westbury led by as many as 54 points and never trailed in the game.  The Panthers scored 50 points off a season-high 36 forced turnovers and saw 10 different Panthers put the ball in the basket.  Old Westbury also tallied 28 assists on 40 field goals made in an efficient offensive effort.

The Panthers started the game 4-for-8 from the field but were dominant defensively from the tip, and the offense was not far behind.  Old Westbury scored the first 10 points of the game to jump out to a double-digit lead just 2:53 into the contest.  Yvanna Jack scored the first point for Medgar Evers, making it a 10-1 game until Clarissa Gallagher drained a three-pointer to give Old Westbury a double-digit lead for good. Old Westbury outscored Medgar Evers 34-22 over the final 15:17 to take a 47-34 lead into the locker room. 

Old Westbury came out of the half on an 11-4 run to take a 31-point lead off a layup by Abigail Williams at the 14:49 mark.  DeAndra Scott dropped in a layup with 9:16 remaining to give Old Westbury a 41-point lead, 69-28. Deslyn Applewhaite's layup with 1:28 showing on the clock made it a 50-point lead while a layup by LeeOndrea Lee made it 94-39, OW's largest lead of the game.  

Clarissa Gallagher led the Panthers with a career-high 22 points and seven rebounds to go with three assists.  Gallagher made her first career start and connected on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor, including 5-of-7 from three-point territory.  DeAndra Scott followed with 17 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and three steals while Deslyn Applewhaite contributed 16 points, nine rebounds, six assists and four steals.  Antoinette Jolly stuffed the stat sheet, tallying eight points, nine assists, six steals and five rebounds.  Abigail Williams added 11 points and LeeOndrea Lee scored a personal-best 10 points.  Myajha Elston grabbed nine boards, including four off the offensive glass. 

Tiffany Woodbine paced Medgar Evers with 13 points and Chantal Biscette and Yvanna Jack followed with 12 and 10 points, respectively.  Biscette registered a backwards triple-double, finishing with 12 points, 11 rebounds and 11 turnovers.   

Old Westbury outshot Medgar Evers from the field 45.5 percent (20-44) to 21.9 percent (13-62).  Old Westbury connected on 6-of-10 from three-point land while Medgar Evers hit 1-of-11.  Old Westbury knocked down 8-of-14 from the free-throw line while Medgar Evers sank 12-of-25.  OW also enjoyed a 58-41 rebounding advantage, including 20 offensive boards that resulted in 20 second chance points. 

SAGE GATORS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the hardwood on Saturday (Dec. 3) when they transition into Skyline Conference action at home against the Sage Gators in Old Westbury, New York.  Game time is set to tip at 2 p.m. inside the Clark Athletic Center.
