www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team earned an 80-72 non-conference road victory over the Lehman Lightning on Wednesday evening on the campus of Monroe College. The win improves OW to 5-5 on the season while dropping Lehman's record to 5-7.
Old Westbury led the entire way as Lehman tied the game twice in the opening minutes. With the game tied at 6-6 at 14:47, Old Westbury put together a 14-2 run to grab a 12-point lead with 11:07 showing on the first-half clock. Lehman responded with a 13-1run from 10:47 to 6:10 to knot the game at 21 all. Old Westbury outscored Lehman 15-8 over the final 5:32 to take a 36-29 lead into the half.
Lehman's Alicia McDaniel scored five straight points to bring her team within two points, 36-34, minutes into the second-half. Old Westbury countered from 18:02 to 11:20 with a 25-7 run to take a 61-41 lead. Lehman pulled within three points (75-72) after going on a 29-12 scoring spree from 10:17 to 1:02. OW replied with a 5-0 run over the final 51 seconds to seal the 80-72 victory.
Kim Weathers was one of three players to score in double figures for the Panthers. Weathers registered her first-career double-double, posting a season-high 31 points (11-19 FG) while pulling down a personal best 12 rebounds to go along with four assists and two steals.
DeAndra Scott combined 15 points and 10 rebounds to record her third straight double-double.
Deslyn Applewhaite chipped in with 11 points and nine rebounds.
Shalaya Nieves paced Lehman with 26 points and 13 rebounds off the bench. Alicia McDaniel added 18 points and Amanda De La Cruz followed with 17 points, 12 rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Old Westbury outshot Lehman from the field 45.3 percent (29-64) to 39.4 percent (26-66). Old Westbury connected on 17-of-30 from the free-throw line while Lehman knocked down 20-of-31. OW also enjoyed a 46-44 rebounding advantage, turning 16 offensive boards into 13 second chance points. OW also converted 15 Lehman turnovers into 20 points.
MOUNT SAINT MARY KNIGHTS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the hardwood for Skyline Conference action on Saturday (Jan. 7) when they take on the Mount Saint Mary Knights in Old Westbury, New York. Game time is set to tip at 2 p.m. inside the Clark Athletic Center.
