OLD WESTBURY, NY (
www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team fell 72-44 to the visiting Mount Saint Mary Knights in a Skyline Conference matchup Saturday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center. The loss moves OW to 5-6 on the season and 1-2 in conference action while Mount Saint Mary improved to 10-2 and 3-0, respectively.
Old Westbury jumped on the score board first when Ja'Taeliah Forde sank a pair of free-throws for an early 2-0 lead. Mount Saint Mary responded with an Amanda Horvers three-pointer at 18:57 to take an early 3-2 advantage. OW countered with an 8-0 run to take hold of a 10-3 lead, their largest of the game. Mount Saint Mary chipped away at the deficit and grabbed the lead at 13:21 off a layup by Charneic McCullough.
Deslyn Applewhaite knocked down a jumper with 6:51 remaining in the first-half to give OW their final lead, 18-17, as Jen Mocanu replied with a jumper for the MSM lead. Mount Saint Mary took a 24-20 advantage into the locker room at the half.
Mount Saint Mary opened the second half with an 18-6 run to take a 42-36 lead with 13:34 showing on the clock. Moments later, Amanda Horvers connected on a three-pointer to give MSM a 48-28 advantage. Mount Saint Mary then went on a 13-0 run from 12:19 to 7:48 to extend their lead to 55-28. Old Westbury was outscored in the second half, 48-24.
Deslyn Applewhaite poured in a team-high 13 points to lead Old Westbury in the scoring column.
Ruth Vargas hit 4-of-6 from the floor to score 11 points off the bench followed by
Antoinette Jolly, who registered 10. Applewhaite and Jolly led OW in rebounds with seven each while Jolly nabbed a game-high six steals.
Mount Saint Mary registered four players in double figures led by Amanda Horvers' 20 points (5-12 FG). Jen Mocanu had 14 points while Charneic McCullough recorded 11 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists and four steals in 31 minutes of court time. Kristina Nieves chipped in with 10 points and Becky Metzger grabbed seven rebounds (five offensive) off the bench.
Mount Saint Mary outshot Old Westbury from the field 39.4 percent (26-66) to 30.2 percent (16-53). Old Westbury connected on 11-of-14 from the free-throw line while Mount Saint Mary knocked down 14-of-21. Mount Saint Mary also enjoyed a 42-31 rebounding advantage. Old Westbury finished with just seven assists and 26 turnovers, which resulted in 27 Mount Saint Mary points while OW converted just six points off 19 Knight miscues.
MOUNT SAINT VINCENT DOLPHINS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the hardwood for Skyline Conference action on Tuesday (Jan. 10) when they hit the road to take on the Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins. Game time is set to tip at 7 p.m. in Riverdale, New York.
