www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team completed the season sweep of the “Battle of the Panthers” Saturday afternoon defeating the Purchase Panthers on the road, 55-54. With the win, Old Westbury improves to 15-6 overall and an 11-6 conference tally. Purchase falls to 7-15 on the season and 7-9 against the conference.
Old Westbury scored first and held the lead for the entire opening half as
Kim Weathers banked in a layup just three seconds into the game. Weathers launch a triple at the 16:05 mark to put OW up 13-6. Moments later,
Deslyn Applewhaite sank a jumper to give Old Westbury a 20-11 advantage, its largest lead of the first half. Purchase outscored OW 18-10 from 11:05 to 1:47 to pull within one point (30-29). The visiting Panthers responded with a 6-1 run to close out the half, taking a 36-30 lead into the locker room at the break.
After the intermission, Old Westbury's
Kim Weathers scored the first four points of the half to stretch the lead to double-digits (40-30) with 18:13 left in the game. Weathers gave OW its largest lead of the game off a layup at 7:22 for the 51-40 advantage. Purchase grabbed its first lead of the game when Jessica Perrone hit a pair of free-throws with 25 seconds left to cap a 14-2 run.
Kim Weathers delivered the game-winning jumper with 10 ticks showing on the clock to put OW on top 55-54. Perrone had two chances to deliver the home team the win in the final seconds but was unable to connect.
Kim Weathers posted 20 points and
Denise Zajonc complemented with 16 to lead the Old Westbury offensive attack. Weathers struggled shooting the ball at just 8-of-21 from the field and distributed a squad high four assists in 37 minutes. Zajonc pocketed three steals as did
DeAndra Scott, who also contributed nine boards and two blocked shots.
Ruth Vargas chipped in with eight rebounds and two swats off the bench.
Rachel Perrone registered a 19 point, 14 rebound double-double in 40 minutes of action to pace Purchase in defeat. Jessica Perrone added seven points and 10 rebounds while MaryAlice Palmer tallied 10 points, seven assists and four rebounds.
Old Westbury shot the ball at a 33.3 percent clip, hitting 21 of their 63 attempts from the field while Purchase hit 30.9 percent (21-68) from the field. OW also drained six three-pointers in the contest and hit 70 percent from the line (7-10) compared to Purchase's 69.2 percent shooting (9-13). Old Westbury out-rebounded Purchase by three boards, 41-38. Purchase harassed OW into 24 turnovers, which led to 20 points while Old Westbury scored just seven points off 18 Purchase giveaways.
ST. JOSEPH'S-L.I. GOLDEN EAGLES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the court on Monday (Feb. 14), taking on the St. Joseph's-L.I. Golden Eagles in a Skyline Conference battle in Patchogue, New York. Game time is set to tip at 7 p.m. from the Danzi Center. .
