Panthers improve to 17-6 as Weathers pours in 36 points

BROOKLYN, NY (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team outscored the Brooklyn Bulldogs by 11 points in the second half to earn a 78-71 non-conference road victory Wednesday evening at the West Quad Center Gymnasium. Old Westbury improves to 17-6 on the season while Brooklyn slips to 15-10.

After getting off to a slow start, Old Westbury found itself down 22-14 with 6:03 remaining on the first half clock. OW chipped away and grabbed its first lead of the game on a 9-0 run that was capped by a layup by Kim Weathers to put the Panthers ahead 23-22 at the 4:03 mark. Brooklyn outscored the Panthers over the final 3:31 to take a slim 34-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Trailing 34-30 after intermission, Old Westbury fell into a six point who with 16:45 remaining in the second half. OW responded with a 13-3 run from 16:36 to 13:32 to take a 46-42 lead. Brittany Jones connected on a trey with 7:54 left on the clock for OW's first double-digit lead (61-51). Kim Weathers sank a pair of free throws to cap off a 25-13 run from 12:10 to 4:53 as Old Westbury took a 71-57 lead. Brooklyn closed out the game on a 14-7 run over the final 4:17 but were unable to overcome the 14 point hole as OW preserved the victory.

Kim Weathers poured in a career-high 36 point effort to go along with seven assists, six rebound and three steals to lead the Panthers to victory. She finished 10-of-23 shooting from the field and 15-of-18 from the free-throw line. Brittany Jones followed with a monster double-double, posting a career-high 17 points to go along with 17 rebounds (tied career-high) to register her 11th career double-double. Jones also added a career-high five assists. Ruth Vargas sparked OW off the bench, scoring 11 points and pulling down six boards while pocketing two steals in 20 minutes of action.

Ariel Smith led Brooklyn with 21 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and six steals in defeat. Lauern Plagainos followed with 13 points and four assists and Tiayana Logan chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds.

Old Westbury won the battle of the boards, 50-40, including a 19-14 edge off the offensive glass, resulting in 25 second chance points. OW also converted 19 Bulldog turnovers into 25 points and dominated the paint, outscoring Brooklyn 32-20 in the paint. Old Westbury shot 37.3 percent from the field (25-67) as Brooklyn hit on 38.5 percent (25-65) From the line, OW hit 20-of-26 (76.9%) and Brooklyn sank 15-of-21 (71.4%). Old Westbury connected on eight triples compared to Brooklyn, which hit six from beyond the arc.

BARD RAPTORS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the court on Saturday (Feb. 19), taking on the Bard Raptors in a Skyline Conference battle in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York. Game time is set to tip at 2 p.m. from the Stevenson Gymnasium.
