www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury softball team split a home opening doubleheader Saturday afternoon with the Baruch Bearcats. Old Westbury fell in game one by the count of 3-2 and bounced back with a 1-0 shutout in the finale. OW stands at 2-4 on the young season while Baruch moves to 1-5.
Baruch jumped out to a two run advantage after one inning of play. Idelissa Lluveras stroked a two out double down the right field line to score Julia Giustiniani for the first run. Nicole Flint followed with a single to right field that knocked home Lluveras. Old Westbury's
Mary Naula delivered a two out single down the left field line to score
Jennifer Jean in the second inning. After drawing third inning leadoff,
Nicole Petrucci stole second and advanced to third and scored on back-to-back passed balls. The score would stay knotted at two until the top of the fifth when Melanie Pellegrino lef off with a double to left center and scored two batters later on a throwing error by OW catcher
Samantha Siegler for the eventual game winner. In the bottom of the seventh,
Alex Heaney smashed a two out double to left center but was stranded as
Mary Naula grounded out to short to end the comeback attempt.
Alex Heaney collected OW's lone extra base hit while
Nicole Petrucci,
Jennifer Jean and
Mary Naula each singled to reach base.
Melanie Pellegrino and Ashley Brandow recorded two hits to lead the Bearcat offense.
Alyssa Clancy took the loss for Old Westbury, working seven innings with five strikeouts. She allowed two earned runs on nine hits and one walk.
Andrea Tepfer earned the victory for Baruch, surrendering two runs on four hits and three walks while sitting down five Panthers on strikes.
In game two,
Nicole Petrucci led off with a double down the right field line and two batters later scored what proved to be the game-winner off a double by
Alyssa Clancy.
Alyssa Clancy surrendered just one hit on the game, giving up a single to Nicole Flint in the second inning.
Alyssa Clancy finished with five strikeouts and no walks to improve to 2-4 on the season. Clancy's shutout victory was second of the season (eighth of career).
Nicole Flint struck out four Panthers and suffered the loss for Baruch, giving up one run on four hits.
MOUNT SAINT MARY KNIGHTS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the field on Saturday (Mar. 26) with the Mount Saint Mary Knights for the Skyline Conference opener in Old Westbury, New York. First pitch of the double-header is scheduled at Noon from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
