www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury Panthers baseball team dropped its Skyline Conference opening doubleheader at Mount Saint Mary. The Knights posted 5-3 and 3-2 victories. With the losses, the Panthers fell to 4-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play. MSM improved to 4-7 on the year and 2-0 in the Skyline Conference.
The Knights opened the scoring in the second inning of the first game as Max Teece singled home Louis Peisel for the first run. Matt Costello scored on a grounder by Angelo Biondi to put Mount Saint Mary up by two runs at the end of two.
Joseph Guido put Old Westbury on the board in the third inning as he reached on an error, advanced on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a grounder by
Josef Schaetzle. OW scored two more runs in the fifth frame to take a 3-2 lead as Schaetzle and
Anthony Orsano scored on an error by MSM shortstop Max Teece. Mount Saint Mary took back the lead for good in the sixth with two runs to jump ahead 4-3 on the power of a two-run homer to left field by Billy Casey. The Knights tacked on its final run in the seventh on a fielder's choice that scored Michael Morelli.
OW starter
Corey Murphy (1-2) took the loss in six inning of work. He surrendered eight hits, four runs, walked one and struck out five.
Josef Schaetzle led the way with two hits for the Panthers.
MSM's Josh Depew (1-1) went eight innings on the mound allowing five hits, three unearned runs, four walks and he fanned six. Marc Soevyn worked a perfect ninth to notch his first save of the season.
In the finale, the Knights did their damage in the fourth and fifth frames. MSM planted two unearned runs in the fourth off OW starter
Tyler Levine.
Melvin Simmons committed an error that allowed John Conroy to score followed by a single by Vinnie Carminati that sent home Josh Depew. Michael Morelli doubled home Joe Clarke in the fifth to put MSM ahead by three runs. OW responded in the sixth with two runs on three hits.
Blake Barbeito and
Joseph Guido led off with singles followed by a base hit by
Melvin Simmons that scored Barbeito.
Anthony Orsano lifted a sacrifice fly to left that allowed Guido to tag up for the second Panther run. Neither team scored the rest of the way as MSM held onto the victory.
Tyler Levine (1-1) suffered the loss after a solid outing in 5.1 innings of work. He allowed three runs on eight hits with just one earned run. Levine walked two and fanned four.
Steven Chapter retired the final two batters in relief of Levine in the sixth inning.
Melvin Simmons paced OW with two hits and a stolen base.
Dan McCrea (1-2) picked up the win as went the distance, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out five. Joe Clark had three hits and John Conroy stroked two in leading MSM to victory.
NO. 4 KEAN COUGARS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers will look to rebound Tuesday (Mar. 22) when they return to the field for a non-conference battle with No. 4 Kean Cougars in Union, New Jersey. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. from Jim Hynes '63 Stadium.
