UNION, NJ (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury Panthers baseball team took an early lead but was unable to hold off No. 6 Kean Cougars as they rallied in the fifth inning and went onto defeat the Panthers 13-5 at Jim Hynes '63 Stadium in Union, New Jersey. OW fell to 4-8 on the season while Kean improved to 13-3.

The Panthers did its damage in the first inning, as OW jumped out to an early 4-0 lead. Josef Scheatzle broke the ice on the scoreboard. After Melvin Simmons and Anthony Orsano drew back-to-back walks and Simmons stole third, Schaetzle was able to plate the game's initial run by singling home Simmons and advanced to second on an error that scored Orsano. Two batters later, Schaetzle scored on an error followed by a double by Steven Henriquez to score Benjamin Farias. Kean posted two runs in the first off the power of Lee Cavico, who launched a two-run homer to center field. Nick Nolan tripled in two runs in the third to tied the game at 4-4.

Old Westbury took back a 5-4 lead in the fourth when Blake Barbeito slapped a single to left field that scored Farias. Kean came right back in the fifth, scoring two runs off a double by Nick olan to clinch the victory. Kean added two more runs in the fifth and also tacked on two runs in each of the sixth and eighth frames.

Old Westbury was lead by the trio of hits by Josef Schaetzle and a pair by Melvin Simmons. Simmons 2-for-4 day at the plate extended his hitting streak to 12 games (13 dating back to 2010) while Anthony Orsano singled to extend his to seven.

Kean's starting three-four-five hitters combined to hit 7-for-11 with six runs scored and eight driven in.

Kevin Briffa (0-1) was charged with the loss for the Panthers as he gave up three runs on two hits in the fifth inning. Starter Marvin Rosario allowed two runs (one unearned) on three over two frames of work. In total, five relievers surrendered nine hits and eight walks over the final six innings

Greg Baruka got his second win of the win for the Cougars, pitching 4.0 innings of relief, allowing three hits and struck out two. Starter Chris Cirlincione departed from the game after retiring just two batters in OW's four run first inning assault.

YESHIVA MACCABEES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers will look to rebound Friday (Mar. 25) when they return to the field for a Skyline Conference doubleheader wth the Yeshiva Maccabees in Old Westbury, New York. First pitch is slated for 10 a.m. from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
