www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury Panthers baseball team closed out the week by outhitting the visiting St. Joseph's-Brooklyn Bears 28-7 in a non-conference sweep on Sunday afternoon. Old Westbury defeated the Bears 8-5 in game one and 14-2 in the finale to improve to 6-10 on the season. The losses move St. Joseph's-Brooklyn to 3-11.
St. Joseph's-Brooklyn scored first with an RBI single by Joe Mendez in the top of the first inning. Old Westbury answered with an RBI single off the bat of
Josef Schaetzle that scored
Melvin Simmons from third. After the Bears took a brief 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the third, Old Westbury grabbed hold of a 3-2 advantage and never looked back. Schaetzle collected his second RBI of the game with a game tying single that scored
Anthony Orsano.
Joseph Caraballo gave OW the lead for good with a single that scored Schaetzle. Four more runs by Old Westbury crossed the plate in the fifth inning. Caraballo's double drove in
Chris DeGennaro and two batters later
Kevin Cohen doubled to score
Euris Turbi and Caraballo.
Alex Abanavas followed with an RBI single to left that scored Cohen. Old Westbury tacked on a single run in the sixth as
Ryan Blanco scored on a single by DeGennaro. St. Joseph's-Brooklyn added three unearned runs in the top of the seventh but weren't enough to overcome a six run deficit.
Josef Schaetzle and
Joseph Caraballo both collected three hits on the game while
Joseph Guido and
Melvin Simmons banged out two. Schaetzle, Caraballo and
Kevin Cohen each scored two runs. Old Westbury swept eight bags in the opener as Caraballo led the way with two. Joe Boccia paced the Bears with a 3-for-4 game at the plate, coming around for two scores while Michael Curdari knocked in two runs.
OW starter
Joshua Burgos (1-0) picked up his first win of the season with a four strikeout performance. He threw 5.1 innings of mound work, allowing one unearned run on four hits and two walks.
Michael Duran tossed 1.1 innings with three strikeouts and
David Stern retired the final batter to preserve the OW victory. Kevin Hernandez dropped for 0-4 on the season for the Bears after surrendering eight runs (three earned) on 14 hits and one walk.
In game two, Old Westbury scored in each of the first five innings off a 14 hit offensive assault of the visiting Bears.

Ryan Blanco singled down the right field line to plate home
Michael Weingartner and scored the eventual game-winner the very next at bat when
Blake Barbeito reached on an error by SJC-Brooklyn center fielder Kevin Diaz. Old Westbury scored four run in the third, three in the fourth and stacked on four more in the sixth to produce a season best 14 runs in the finale.
Melvin Simmons collected his 11th career three hit game with a 3-for-3 game at the plate, including three scores, two runs batted in and a stolen base.
Josef Schaetzle (2-3, 3 RBI) and
Benjamin Farias (2-4, 2 RBI) joined Simmons with multiple hits.
Joseph Guido and
Blake Barbeito each scored two runs on the game. OW stole seven bags in the series finale. Joe Mendez cracked St. Joseph's-Brooklyn lone hit of the game.
Jose Pena (1-0) earned the win for Old Westbury, working 4.0 innings on the hill, allowing one earned run on one hit and two walks.
Alex Rutman and
Kevin Briffa combined to work the final three innings to preserve the combined one-hitter. Daniel Contant (0-3) was tagged with the loss for the Bears. Contant was touched for five earned runs on seven hits and two walks in three innings of work.
