POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (
www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury Panthers baseball team scored eight runs for the fifth time this season and defeated the Vassar Brewers by the count of 8-5 Wednesday afternoon at the Prentiss Baseball Field. Following the victory, the Panthers are now 7-10 on the season, while the Brewers fall to 5-6.
OW got on the board early with a pair of scores in the top of the second.
Benjamin Farias singled to left field to drive in
Josef Schaetzle from third for the games initial run. Three batters later,
Blake Barbeito singled up the middle to score
Anthony Orsano. The Panthers proceeded to break the game open with a two-run fourth.
Chris DeGennaro singled and scored off a double through the right side by Farias. Two batters later,
Ali Ferreiras knocked home Farias off a single to center.
Vassar answered back with a four run fourth off four hits and an error. Devon Luongo singled home Sal Costanzo for Vassar's first run. Joe Castilla followed with a double down the left field line to score Brett Zaziski. Luongo then scored on a fielder's choice and Castilla scored on a wild pitch by
Ryan Bresnahan. Vassar scored again in the fifth to take its first lead when Mike Perrone was hit by the pitch, stole second, advanced to third on a grounder and scored on a Costanzo sacrifice fly to center.
Steven Henriquez roped a two-out double to left followed by a double by Ferreiras to knot the game at five. The Panthers took back the lead for good in the eighth frame when Henriquez stroked a single down the left field line to score Farias from second. OW tacked on two more insurance runs in the ninth off a homer to right field by
Josef Schaetzle that scored
Melvin Simmons to put the Panthers up, 8-5.
Benjamin Farias led OW's 11-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored in addition to a pair of stolen bases.
Chris DeGennaro (2-5, 2 R),
Steven Henriquez (2-5, RBI, R) and
Ali Ferreiras (2-2, 2 RBI) registered multiple hits and
Josef Schaetzle cracked his second career home run while scoring two runs. Sal Costanzo's 2-for-3 day at the plate led Vassar.
Old Westbury's starter
Ryan Bresnahan was not around to pick up the win after working 3.1 innings of five hit ball. He was charged with two earned runs and struck out one before
Tyler Levine came in for 1.2 innings of relief work.
Steven Chapter (1-0) picked up his first career victory with three frames of scoreless mound work.
Marvin Rosario closed out the ninth to earn his second save of the season. Race Bottini took the loss for Vassar, falling to 0-1 on the season. Bottoni recorded just one out, giving up one run on two hits.
ST. JOSEPH'S-L.I. GOLDEN EAGLES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the field for a Skyline Conference doubleheader on the road with the St. Joseph's-L.I. Golden Eagles on Saturday (Apr. 2) in Patchogue, New York. First pitch is slated for Noon from the Greg Alfano Field.
