(www.oldwestburypanthers.com) –  The SUNY College at Old Westbury Panthers baseball team split a Skyline Conference doubleheader against the Maritime Privateers in the inaugural Prostate Cancer Awareness Day at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex in Old Westbury, New York. Maritime took the first game, 10-8, while Old Westbury won the second game, 8-4. With the split, Old Westbury stands at 13-12 on the season and 5-5 in conference play while Maritime moves to 12-12 and 4-8, respectively.

In the first game, Josef Schaetzle delivered a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Joseph Guido for the games initial run. Maritime scored two runs in the top of the second and OW answered back with Benjamin Farias scoring after Chris DeGennaro was caught stealing second. Old Westbury took a 6-2 lead at the end of four inning on four hits and two errors. Ali Ferreiras clubbed a two-run homer to right field that scored Schaetzle. Three batters later, Chris DeGennaro singled home Benjamin Farias and Michael Weingartner singled in DeGennaro. Maritime outscored Old Westbury 5-2 over the next two innings to knock Panther starter Corey Murphy out of the game. Maritime piled on three runs in the top of the ninth off OW reliever Marvin Rosario on two hits to take the opening game.

Josef Schaetzle (2-3, 2 RBI, R) stroked a pair of doubles and Michael Weingartner (2-4, RBI, R, SB) had pair of singles to lead OW's hitting efforts. Benjamin Farias scored two runs ripped up the base path to the tune of three stolen bases, as did Joseph Guido and Melvin Simmons. Nick Gallis collected four hits while Trevor Cannella drove in three runs and Ed Martinez scored three to lead Maritime.

Corey Murphy struck out five and lasted 5.1 innings, before reliever Marvin Rosario (1-1) took over the final 3.2 innings. Murphy surrendered seven runs (five earned) on 10 hits and three walks. Rosario, who suffered his first loss of the season, fanned four batters while giving up three runs on three hits and two walks. Christopher Myers improved to 3-2 for Maritime after earning the complete game victory. He gave up eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits and five walks.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Old Westbury posted four runs in the first innings to grab hold of the game early on. Anthony Orsano singled home Joseph Guido and stole second while Melvin Simmons robbed home to pull off the double steal. Josef Schaetzle followed with a triple to right field, scoring Orsano and scored when Ali Ferreiras reached on an error. Two more runs crossed the plate in the third for OW including the eventual game-winner off the bat of Schaetzle that scored Orsano. Old Westbury added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and Maritime scored a pair in the fifth and seventh.

Old Westbury's Melvin Simmons (2-4, RBI, R, SB), Anthony Orsano (2-4, RBI, 2-R, SB), Josef Schaetzle (2-4, 2-RBI, 2-R, 2-SB) and Ryan Blanco (2-3, RBI, R) collected multiple hits. Joey Semler and Nick Galli drove in two runs each to lead Maritime.

Chris Sanabria worked seven innings to earn the complete game victory, improveing to 2-3 on the season. Sanabria struck out two while giving up four runs on nine hits and five walks. Ryan Simpson (1-1) was dealt the Maritime loss, surrendering eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits and one walk.

YESHIVA MACCABEES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the field for a Skyline Conference doubleheader Monday (Apr. 11) at home with the Yeshiva Maccabees in Old Westbury, New York. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. from the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.
