www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury Panthers baseball team split its regular season Skyline Conference finale Saturday afternoon with the Purchase Panthers at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. Purchase surprised Old Westbury with a 3-1 victory in the opener before OW took game two, 17-1. Old Westbury improves to 17-14 on the season and 9-7 in conference action while Purchase now stands at 15-13 and 8-8.
Both teams scored in the opening frame using the ground out to effectively score from third. Purchase used Sean Lafaye's grounder to score Dominick Simone while Old Westbury's
Anthony Orsano platted home
Joseph Guido. Purchase scored the go ahead run in the fourth on a run scoring single by Phil Sanford and tacked on an insurance run in the seventh with Austin Groves' RBI single.
Corey Murphy took the loss for Old Westbury, dropping to 2-4 on the season after working six innings on the mound. Murphy was hit for three runs on 11 hits and one walk while fanning five.
Steven Chapter worked two inning of scoreless relief for Old Westbury. Albert Baez went the distance for Purchase, striking out seven, allowing one run on eight hits.
Joseph Guido paced Old Westbury with three hits in four trips to the plate. Austin Groves led the way for Purchase, collecting three hits while Dominick Simone, Sean Lafaye, Mark Donahue and Phil Sanford registered multiple hits.
Purchase jumped on the board with an RBI double by Austin Groves to score Sean Lafaye in the first inning. Old Westbury answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run blast to left center by
Anthony Orsano, his third of the season.
Ali Ferreiras lifted a sacrifice fly out to right field that was deep enough to score
Benjamin Farias in the second inning to put OW ahead, 3-1. Old Westbury opened up the scoring gates in the third inning to the tune of nine runs on eight hits. Three straight doubles (
Joseph Guido,
Melvin Simmons and
Anthony Orsano) to open the third scored two runs. Joseph Schaetzle followed with his fourth triple of the season that scored Orsano to give OW a 7-1 advantage. Old Westbury scored three more in the fourth to register runs in the opening four frames.
Two more runs crossed the plate for Old Westbury in the sixth to seal the victory.
Tyler Levine improved to 3-1 on the season after bulldogging his way to a four-strikeout complete game victory. Levine held Purchase to one run on six hits and dealt out just one free pass. Eric Cuadrado took Purchase's loss after exiting after 2.2 innings on the hill. Cuadrado served up 10 runs (eight earned) on eight hits and two walks.
Old Westbury's one-through-four hitters (Guido, Simmons, Orsano, Schaetzle) combined to hit 11-for-18 with 13 RBI and 10 runs scored. Orsano drove in five runs while Guido scored four.
Melvin Simmons stole two bases, scored three runs and drove in three. Austin Groves had two hits for Purchase in defeat.
STATEN ISLAND DOLPHINS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the field for a non-conference battle Tuesday (Apr. 19) with the Staten Island Dolphins in Staten Island, New York. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
