www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury Panthers softball team swept past the St. Joseph's-L.I. Golden Eagles in Skyline Conference battles Saturday at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. OW won the first game 3-2 and topped the Golden Eagles in the second game, 9-4. Following the victories, the Panthers are now 8-5 on the season and 5-1 in conference play while the Golden Eagles dropped to 3-7 and 2-2, respectively. The pair of victories marked the first sweep against St. Joseph's-L.I. for fifth year head coach
Mary Jo Fazio.
In game one, the Panthers to a 2-0 lead at the end of three innings on a single by
Samantha Siegler that drove in
Nicole Petrucci and
Denise Zajonc. After the Golden Eagles scored one in the sixth off an error, they tied the game at two in the seventh with on a second error by OW shortstop
Nicole Petrucci. The Panthers answered back in the bottom of the seventh when
Jennifer Jean slugged a walk-off single to left field that scored
Alex Heaney for the game-winner.
Sophomore
Alyssa Clancy picked up her seventh win of the season in the circle for OW, pitching a complete game and allowing just one earned run on two hits while striking out nine. Julia De Carmine took the loss for St. Joseph's-L.I., falling to 2-3 on the season after allowing three runs on seven hits and four walks to go along with six strikeouts.
Old Westbury's
Nicole Petrucci banged out three hits and scored one while Jennier Jean added a 2-for-3 game at the plate and
Samantha Siegler drove in a pair in going 1-for-3.
In the finale, the Panthers took the lead in the first as
Nicole Petrucci and
Samantha Howley both scored on errors. OW added a third run in the second frame as Petrucci singled up the middle to score
Jessica Spero. After St. Joseph's-L.I. got on the board in the fourth with a bases loaded walk, OW responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning on a single by Petrucci that drove in Spero. OW tacked on four more runs in the fifth innings and another in the sixth to earn a 9-4 Skyline sweep.
Alyssa Clancy (8-5) pitched the complete game for the Panthers to win her 21st career game, improving to 21-10. She surrendered four runs on 13 hits and two walks while fanning three batters. Cassie Martinez dropped her record to 1-3 on the season for SJC-L.I. Martinez was offensively attacked for three earned runs on 10 hits while her squad committed seven errors. She also struck out four.
Nicole Petrucci went 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored to lead the way for OW.
Jessica Spero also had a solid game, matching a career-high with 3-for-3 to go with three runs scored and two driven in. Four Golden Eagles registered multiple hits, led by Julia De Carmine's 3-for-4 game at the plate.
FARMINGDALE STATE RAMS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the field for a Skyline Conference doubleheader Sunday (Apr. 3) on the road with the Farmingdale State Rams in Farmingdale, New York. First pitch is slated for Noon from the Farmingdale State Softball Field.
