OLD WESTBURY, NY
(www.oldwestburypanthers.com) –The SUNY College at Old Westbury Panthers baseball team used strong pitching and timely hitting to defeat the visiting United States Merchant Marine Academy, 3-2, Wednesday evening at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. The win improved Old Westbury to 18-15 on the season, while the Mariners took the fall to 10-13-1.

The game marked Senior Day for eight Panthers – #4 Ryan Blanco, #25 Joshua Burgos, #12 Anthony Fernandez, #30 Ali Ferreiras, #13 Jorge Hiraldo, #8 Marvin Rosario, #24 Josef Schaetzle and #2 Melvin Simmons.

Panther starting pitcher Chris Sanabria retired the first six batters in order while OW jumped out to a 1-0 lead on the two-out single by Steven Henriquez in the second frame. Benjamin Farias tripled in the fourth to drive in Ali Ferreiras, doubling Old Westbury's lead.

USMMA plated one in the top of the fifth on back-to-back doubles by Jake Martin and Daniel Collins, but the Panthers never gave up. Old Westbury answered in the sixth with a sacrifice fly by Anthony Orsano, which scored Melvin Simmons. The Mariners crept back into the game late, helped along by two OW errors, allowing one run to score, cutting into the 3-2 deficit. Sanabria allowed just three hits over the final four innings to notch the complete game victory. Merchant Marine threatened in the ninth with a man in scoring position. Andy Martin singled while OW right fielder Anthony Orsano threw a rocket to first baseman Melvin Simmons, who flicked it over to home plate where Steven Henriquez tagged out the game-tying run.

Chris Sanabria bulldogged his way to his third straight complete game victory as he earned his team leading fourth win of the season. Sanabria struck out five while allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits and two walks. Andy Martin took the loss for USMMA, despite striking out six with zero walks. Martin surrendered three runs (two earned) on six hits.

Ali Ferreiras led the offense with two hits and two runs scored, while Benjamin Farias and Steven Henriquez had run scoring hits. The Mariners ended up outhitting OW, 8-6, led by the trio of Warren Hartmann, Jake Martin and Andy Martin, who collected two hits apiece on the day.
