PANTHER SOFTBALL SPLITS SENIOR DAY DOUBLEHEADER WITH ELMIRA

(www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – During Senior Day at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex, the SUNY College at Old Westbury Panthers softball team split a doubleheader with the Elmira Soaring Eagles. The Panthers shutout the Soaring Eagles 4-0 in the first game and then suffered a 4-2 loss in game two. The split moves Old Westbury to 19-8 on the season and Elmira to 5-7.

In the opener, Nicole Mannino broke the scoring ice when she singled to score Nicole Petrucci in the third inning for the eventual game-winner. Alyssa Clancy led off the sixth with a double to right center. Mary Naula entered as a pinch runner for Clancy, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored off a sacrifice fly by Lauren Isaac.

Alyssa Clancy and Nicole Mannino both collected a pair of hits to lead Old Westbury's offense. Clancy's double was OW's lone extra base hit.

In the circle, Alyssa Clancy improved to 17-7 on the season, notching a one-hit complete game shutout. The shutout was her seventh of the season while the one-hitter was her fourth. Clancy finished the game with nine strikeouts and allowed a two-out single by Alex Andrade in the second inning. Casandra Fontinell took Elmira's loss after allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out five.

Elmira jumped out to an early one run lead in the top of the second when Erin Pruess knocked home Stephany Fontinell off a double. Old Westbury responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to grab a 2-1 lead. After Nicole Mannino led off with a single, two batters later, Jennifer Jean clubbed her fourth home run of the season over the fence in left center field. Elmira replied with three more runs in the third. Erin Rupell doubled in Alex Andrade and scored off Stephany Fontinell's single. Two batters later, Fontinell scored on a run scoring single by Mikayla Bean.

Samantha Howley cracked open her second multi hit game of her career with a pair of singles. Nicole Petrucci doubled and Jennfier Jean smacked her fourth homer of the season. Senior Lauren Isaac collected a single in going 1-for-3 at the plate. Erin Rupell, Stephany Fontinell and Caitlin Roman, Elmira's 3-4-5 hitters combined to hit 6-for-11 with two RBI and three runs scored.

Denise Zajonc was charged with her first loss of the season, moving to 2-1 after giving up four runs on eight hits and a walk in three innings. Alyssa Clancy worked four innings in relief of Zajonc, allowing three hits while fanning three. Alex Puglisi (2-3) earned Elmira's victory by striking out nine Panthers. Puglisi was charged with two runs on eight hits and handed out one free pass.
