SOFTBALL FALLS AT NYU-POLY IN SKYLINE FIRST ROUND, FACES MOUNT SAINT MARY SATURDAY

(www.oldwestburypanthers.com) - The SUNY College at Old Westbury Panthers softball team fell victim to 10 strikeouts from Miranda Merilli as third-seeded OW fell 11-8 to NYU-Poly Wednesday at Floyd Bennett Field in the first round of the Skyline Conference Championship. Old Westbury (20-10) will now face fourth-seeded Mount Saint Mary in an elimination game on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Farmingdale, New York. NYU-Poly (22-13) moves on and will face top-seeded Farmingdale State at 11 a.m.

Old Westbury jumped out to a two-run advantage off a two-run homer by Jessica Spero in the second frame. NYU-Poly answered in the bottom of the second with a two-run homer off the bat of Annamarie Smith to knot the game at 2-2. NYU-Poly planted six runs on seven hits to take an 8-2 lead including a three-run homer by Smith. Samantha Siegler responded for Old Westbury in the fifth with a three-run shot to make 8-5. After reaching with a single, Alyssa Clancy scored on an error by centerfielder Ryane Pappa. Alex Heaney followed with a two-run single to tie the game at 8-8. Megan Moran, Annamarie Smith and Sadie Hoeschen went back-to-back-to-back solo home runs in the bottom of the sixth to reclaim an 11-8 lead for good. Old Westbury went down 1-2-3 in the seventh.

Alyssa Clancy took the loss for Old Westbury after surrendering 11 runs (10 earned) on 15 hits and two walks while striking out six. NYU-Poly starter Miranda Merilli gave up eight runs (seven earned) on 10 hits while striking out 10 but did not factor into the decision as Lyndsey Rathburn picked up the win with two scoreless innings of relief.

Lauren Isaac, Jessica Spero and Alex Heaney all registered multiple hits on the day for Old Westbury. Annamarie Smith paced NYU-Poly with three home runs, totaling six RBI in a 3-for-4 game at the plate. Megan Moran also collected three hits.

MOUNT SAINT MARY KNIGHTS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the field Saturday (Apr. 30) to face the Mount Saint Mary Knights in the elimination game of the Skyline Conference Championship Tournament in Farmingdale, New York.
