PANTHER BASEBALL WINS EIGHTH STRAIGHT, PREVENTS LIGHTNING FROM STRIKING IN 15-2 DRUBBING OF LEHMAN

OLD WESTBURY, NY (www.oldwestburypanthers.com) –  The SUNY College at Old Westbury Panthers baseball team won its eighth-straight game Wednesday evening, defeating the Lehman Lightning, 15-2, in non-conference action at the Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex. The victory improves OW to 12-10 on the season while Lehman drops to 4-14.

The Lightning struck first with two runs in the top of the first off OW starter Jose Pena. Back-to-back leadoff doubles scored Jeremy Lopez for the games initial run. Jhon Comas Dislas followed with a single that drove in Christian Fadul for Lehman's second and final run. Old Westbury responded with four runs in the bottom half of the opening frame. Joseph Guido smacked a leadoff double, stole third and scored on a single by the reigning ECAC and Skyline Conference player of the week Melvin Simmons. Simmons stole second and advanced to third on a single off the bat of Anthony Orsano. Both runners advanced a base on a passed ball with Simmons trotting across the plate to knot the game at 2-2. Josef Schaetzle followed with what proved to be the eventual game-winning single to score Orsano from third. OW scored two more in the second, one in the third, two in the fifth and tacked on six more in the sixth en route to a 15-2 victory.

Old Westbury got another solid night out of senior Melvin Simmons, who collected his 12th multi-hit game of the season in going 2-for-4 with an RBI, two runs scored and a pair of stolen bases. Joseph Guido doubled and went 2-for-3 (third straight multi-hit game)with three runs score, one RBI and two stolen bags while Joseph Caraballo hit 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Ali Ferreiras led the swipe fest, stealing four bases while Benjamin Farias and Steven Henriquez nabbed two each. Ferreiras and Anthony Orsano both came around to score twice on the day. Jeremy Lopez (4-5) paced Lehman with four hits and Christian Fadul added two.

Kevin Briffa notched two innings with two strikeouts in relief of starter Jose Pena to improve to 2-1 on the season. Steve Ferrara (1 IP, 2 SO, 0 H), Chris Sanabria (1 IP, 1 SO), Jorge Hiraldo (1 IP, 1 SO, 0 H), Ranser Reyes (1 IP, 1 SO), David Stern (1 IP, 0 H) and Michael Duran (1 IP, 2 SO) worked the final six innings, allowing just three hits while fanning seven. Brian Cubero was dealt the loss for Lehman falling to 1-5 on the season after surrendering six runs (four earned) on six hits in two innings of mound work.
