PANTHER BASEBALL EDGED OUT OF ECAC SEMIS BY RUTGERS-NEWARK

Old Westbury will await word on possible NCAA Tournament bid

(www.oldwestburypanthers.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury Panthers baseball team was held to four hits on the day as Ryan Williams pitched the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders to a 2-0 victory to eliminate OW from the ECAC Metro Region Championship semifinal Saturday afternoon at Riverfront Stadium. Fourth-seeded Old Westbury moves to 24-20 on the season while top-seeded Rutgers-Newark (23-19) moves into the championship game against sixth-seed Richard Stockton Sunday at 1 p.m. in Newark, New Jersey.

In the opening frame, Old Westbury was unable to push across the games initial run as Melvin Simmons was stranded on third after he stroked a one-out double and advanced to third on a failed pick-off attempt. Rutgers-Newark took an early one run advantage in the bottom of the first when Patrick Reitemeyer led off with a single followed by a run-scoring double off the bat of Tim Miller.

Old Westbury threatened in the second when Chris DeGennaro reached on a single, stole second and advanced to third on a one-out grounder, but was stranded on back-to-back infield outs. In the fourth, Rutgers-Newark tacked another run to cap the scoring on the day off a single to right by Kevin Olah that scored Chris Ballester from second.

Old Westbury once again was unable to cross the plate in the eighth. Joseph Caraballo banged out a lead-off single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved along to third on a ground out. Joseph Guido worked a two-out walk and was thrown out at second on a steal attempt to close out the eighth.

Ryan Bresnahan (1-7) suffered the loss for Old Westbury despite striking out four in 5.1 innings of work. Bresnahan surrendered two runs (one earned) on seven hits and two walks before Marvin Rosario took over for the final 2.2 innings of relief. Rosario held Rutgers-Newark hitless over his 2.2 innings while striking out four and dealing out a pair of walks. Ryan Williams improved to 5-6 for Rutgers-Newark with the complete game four-hit shutout. Williams fanned six and walked two in the victory.

Melvin Simmons led OW at the plate with a 1-for-4 outing including a first-inning double. Chris DeGennaro, Benjamin Farias and Joseph Caraballo registered singles. Michael Cassese registered a pair of singles to lead Rutgers-Newark while Tim Miller and Michael DiCenso stroked doubles.
