Old Westbury registers four players in double digit scoring to improve to 3-2 in Skyline Conference play

(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team pickup up a 71-44 victory over the Purchase Panthers Thursday evening in a Skyline Conference showdown in Purchase, New York.  With the win, OW improves to 7-6 on the season and 3-2 in conference action while Purchase fell to 3-7 and 0-4, respectively.

OW broke out of the starting gates with a 9-0 run.  Old Westbury's lead dropped to eight (21-13) but replied with an 18-7 run to close out the final 8:49 of the first half.   Old Westbury put on a shooting clinic in the first half to pull away from Purchase and grab a 39-20 lead by the break.  At the end of the first half, OW shot 50 percent (16-32 FG) shooting from the field including knocking down 5-of-10 from three-point land, while Purchase hit just 16 percent (4-25) from the floor.
OW's lead never dipped below 19 points in the second half, while extending their advantage to as many as 29.

Deslyn Applewhaite posted a team-high 17 points (3-3 3FG) and Antoinette Jolly (7-7 FG) added 15 to lead Old Westbury.  Jolly finished the game with seven rebounds and five steals in 21 minutes of court time.  Clarissa Gallagher and Denise Zajonc * chipped in with 10 points each.  Ruth Vargas tallied nine points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Alyssa Guido joined the 1,000-point club, as she led Purchase with a 26 point outing.  Alysse LaPadula finished with team highs in rebounds (7) and assists (4).    

The Panthers' defense also shined, forcing 17 turnovers, which resulted in 24 points, and holding Purchase to 25.5 percent from the field (14-55).  Old Westbury finished the game shooting 50.8 percent (30-59) from the floor and grabbed 35-32 rebounding edge. 

NYU-POLY FIGHTING BLUE JAYS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the hardwood for Skyline Conference action on Sunday (Jan. 15) when they hit the road for the battle with the NYU-Poly Fighting Blue Jays in Brooklyn, New York.  Game time is set to tip at 1 p.m. from Jacobs Gymnasium.
