OLD WESTBURY, NY (
www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team outscored the visiting St. Joseph's-Brooklyn Bears 48-19 in the second half en route to claiming a 76-48 non-conference victory Tuesday evening in Old Westbury, New York. OW now stands at 9-6 and is currently on a four game win streak while St. Joseph's-Brooklyn fell to 3-10 on the season.
Both teams played a close first half as Old Westbury's 5-0 lead to open the game was the largest margin in the first half. The opening 20 minutes featured a total of seven lead changes and four ties. Kelly McNamee dropped in a layup with 26 seconds remaining to give St. Joseph's-Brooklyn a 29-28 lead heading into the break.
Old Westbury roared out of the locker room in the second half with a 17-4 run over the opening 6:38 to take a 45-33 lead. Janine Doran's layup brought St. Joseph's-Brooklyn within 10 points, but OW replied with a 16-5 spurt from 12:34 to 8:05 extend their lead to 21 (61-40).
Jasmine Moore sank a jumper with 20 seconds remaining to give OW a 28 point lead, their largest of the game.
Deslyn Applewhaite posted her third career double-double to lead OW with 16 points and a career-high 12 rebounds in 29 minutes of action.
Antoinette Jolly and Clarissa Gallgher followed with 14 points each while
Denise Zajonc * chipped in with 13. Jolly finished with seven rebounds, six assist and four steals.
Abigail Williams contributed nine rebound and three blocks.
Ashley McQuillan was the lone Bear to finish in double-figures, hitting on just 4-of-16 from the field to register 10 points. Janine Doran followed with nine and Kristin Binckes ribbed down a team- high eight boards.
Old Westbury outshot St. Joseph's-Brooklyn from the field 42.1 percent (32-76) to 27.7 percent (18-65). Old Westbury connected on 4-of-15 from three-point range while St. Joseph's-Brooklyn knocked down 3-of-25. OW also enjoyed a 55-39 rebounding advantage, including 18 offensive boards that resulted in 16 second chance points. Old Westbury converted 20 Bear miscues into 22 points.
ST. JOSEPH'S-L.I. GOLDEN EAGLES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the hardwood for Skyline Conference action on Thursday (Jan. 19) when they host the St. Joseph's-L.I. Golden Eagles in Old Westbury, New York. Game time is set to tip at 7 p.m. inside the Clark Athletic Center.
