WOMEN’S HOOPS EXTEND WIN STREAK WITH 67-53 DEFEAT OVER ST. JOSEPH’S-L.I.

OLD WESTBURY, NY
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team rolled past the visiting St. Joseph's-L.I. Golden Eagles in Skyline Conference action Thursday evening at home.  The win is OW's fifth straight, improving to 10-6 on the season and 5-2 in conference play.  St. Joseph's-L.I. drops to 8-7 overall and 3-4 against the conference. 

Old Westbury used a 7-0 run to open the game and later extended it as Clarissa Gallagher sank a pair of free throws to give OW a 16-3 lead with 7:17 left in the half.  St. Joseph's-L.I. replied with a 9-2 run to pull within six, but OW countered with a 6-2 run in closing out the half to hold a 24-14 lead at the break. 

In the second half, St. Joseph's-L.I. made a strong push facing a 16 point deficit.  St. Joseph's-L.I. went on a 21-7 scoring spree from 9:30 to 3:34 to make it a 52-50 game.  Old Westbury regained their composure and closed out the game on a 15-3 run over the final 3:05 to secure the victory. 

Deslyn Applewhaite paced Old Westbury in scoring for the sixth straight contest, finishing with a game-high 18 points (8-16 FG) and a career-high 15 rebounds to notch her second straight consecutive double-double (fourth-career).  Denise Zajonc * followed with 13 points, eight rebounds (career-high) and three steals.  Antoinette Jolly contributed 12 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals as Clarissa Gallagher went for 10 points on 2-of-5 shooting from three-point land.  Abigail Williams and Ruth Vargas each ripped down 12 boards. 

Danielle Hamlin led St. Joseph's-L.I. with 16 points.  Laura Cohen followed with 13 while Amanda Bender posted a double-double, combining 11 points (4-21 FG) and 10 rebounds.  Christina Cohen nabbed a game-high five steals and Hamlin rejected two shots. 

Old Westbury held the shooting advantage, outshooting St. Joseph's-L.I. from the field 32.4 percent (27-74) to 29.3 percent (19-65).  Old Westbury connected on 4-of-9 from three-point territory while the Golden Eagles landed 12-of-37.  OW also enjoyed a season best +22 rebounding advantage (64-40), turning 24 offensive boards into 15 second chance points.  OW also converted 23 St. Joseph's-L.I. turnovers into 17 points.

SAGE GATORS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the hardwood for Skyline Conference action on Saturday (Jan. 21) when they travel to take on the Sage Gators in Troy, New York.  Game time is set to tip at 1 p.m. inside the Neff Center.
