MEN’S SOCCER CLOSES OUT YEAR WITH 6-3 WIN OVER YESHIVA

Steven Burgos records two goals in final game

BRONX, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) –   The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's soccer team exploded for six goals on offense to pick up its fifth win of the year at Yeshiva (1-8; 1-8 Skyline) Thursday evening after beating the Maccabees, 6-3.  The victory was the second-straight for the Panthers (5-14, 4-5 Skyline), who concluded their season on a high note.  Old Westbury failed to advance to the Skyline Conference Championship Tournament for the first time since 2006.  The Panthers came back in 2007 to claim their first ever Skyline Conference Championship.

The Panthers were led offensively by senior Steven Burgos, who had two goals on the day, his second and third of the year.  Old Westbury broke the scoring ice early on with a Michael Mosher finding Burgos in the ninth minute to take a 1-0 lead.  Scott Carey netted goals in the 32nd and 36th minutes for his first career multi-goal game, his third and fourth scores of the season.  Yeshiva responded in the 38th minute to make it a 3-1 game on a header by Jack Satrigler from Doron David.  Old Westbury took a 3-1 lead into the half, outshooting Yeshiva 14-6.

Burgos recorded his first career game-winner along with two-goal game when Jon Kerby found him in the 55th minute for a 4-1 lead.  Kerby recorded his second assist in the 66th minute to give Tana Weekes his team-leading seventh goal of the season.  Yeshiva answered back with Leon Aboudi goals in the 70th and 74th minutes to cut the deficit down to 5-3.  DJ Stock tacked on an insurance goal in the 85th minute to close out the scoring with his first goal of the season.

In the end, Old Westbury held the advantage in shots (30-13), shots in goal (14-9) and corner kicks (9-3).  Old Westbury had three goalies see time in net, combining for six saves.  Peter Sicardi played the opening 58:05, allowing one goals while making three saves.  Marcelo Guardado took over for the next 26:26, recorded two saves with two goals allowed before senior Pablo Diaz closed out the final 5:29 of his career with one stop.  Yeshiva's Nathan Japhet played 70:43 and made seven saves with five goals allowed and Joseph Blechner made one save in the final 19:17, surrendering one goal.
