BROOKLYN, NY (
www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) –The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team were unable to recover from a slow start and fell 58-41 to the Brooklyn Bulldogs on the road Tuesday evening from the West Quad Center. The loss moves Old Westbury to 1-2 on the season while Brooklyn improved to 2-1.
Old Westbury and Brooklyn exchanged leads four times in the first half with the Bulldogs grabbing the lead for good after putting together a 13-0 run from 11:30 to 9:28 to take an 18-9 lead. Char Saint Laurent nailed back-to-back three-pointers to give Brooklyn a 24-11 lead. Moments later, Saint Laurent connected on her fifth long ball of the half to put her team up 29-12 with 3:28 remaining on the first-half clock.
Chloe Mellon sank a pair of free-throws for Old Westbury to make it a 29-14 game heading into the half. Old Westbury shot just 19 percent (4-of-21) from the field in the first-half while Brooklyn was slightly better at 25.6 percent (11-of-43)
Brooklyn controlled the pace of the second-half, outscoring Old Westbury 29-27 in the final stanza. Old Westbury chipped away at the deficit and cut it down to nine points on three separate occasions.
Antoinette Jolly drained a jumper with 8:36 remaining to make it 41-32. Brooklyn responded with 17-9 closeout run over the final 6:34 to grab the victory at home.
DeAndra Scott led Old Westbury for the third straight game in scoring, finishing with 14 points on 5-of-14 shooting from the floor. Scott added five rebounds and a team-high four steals.
Antoinette Jolly pulled down a game-high 12 boards to go with seven points and three steals.
Raven Pentz added eight points and two steals.
Char Saint Laurent poured in a game-high 19 points, hitting on 5-of-12 from three-point range to go along with nine rebounds and three steals. Vanessa D'Ambrosi contributed 10 rebounds and five steals while Nicole Francomano had 12 points, seven assists and six steals. Brittany Bowen added 13 points, seven rebounds and two steals.
Old Westbury shot 31.8 percent (14-of-44) from the field, 38.5 percent from three-point territory (5-of-13) and 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from the free-throw line. Brooklyn connected on 32.4 percent (24-74) from the floor, 28.1 percent (9-of-32) from long distance and just 25 percent (1-of-4) from the charity stripe. Brooklyn also dominated the boards, holding a 49-35 rebounding edge, including a 23-8 offensive rebounding advantage, which was turned into just 13 second chance points. Brooklyn also converted 34 Old Westbury miscues into only 14 points.
FARMINGDALE STATE RAMS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the hardwood for a Skyline Conference opener on Thursday (Nov. 29) evening, taking on the Farmingdale State Rams in Farmingdale, New York. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. from George E. Nold Hall.
