FARMINGDALE, NY (
www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team opened Skyline Conference play Thursday evening with a 66-47 road loss to the Farmingdale State Rams from George E. Nold Hall. The loss moves Old Westbury (1-3) to 0-1 in conference play while Farmingdale State (2-3) jumps out to a 1-0 conference start.
Farmingdale State scored the first 10 points to take control of the game while Siobhan Purivs extended the lead to 15 (18-3) on a pair of free-throws with 14:26 remaining in the half. Old Westbury answered with a 17-6 run from 12:36 to 3:03 to make it a 24-20 game. Old Westbury's late run cut the Farmingdale State lead to 26-20 at the half.
Old Westbury chipped away at the deficit early in the second-half and tied the game at 32-all with a layup by
DeAndra Scott. Farmingdale State responded with a Christina Merrill three-ball to give the Rams the lead for good with 14:43 left on the second-half clock. Farmingdale State closed out the final 6:42 on a 13-0 run.
DeAndra Scott's 17 points led Old Westbury in scoring for the fourth straight game. Scott connected on 7-of-14 shooting from the field while pulling down a game-high eight rebounds.
Clarissa Gallagher followed with 11 points (4-17 FG) while
Antoinette Jolly added seven rebounds and four steals.
Raven Price chipped in with seven rebounds and two steals off the bench.
Nicky Young poured in a game-high 27 points (8-15 FG, 9-12 FT) to go with five steals. Christina Merrill nabbed a game-high seven steals while contributing eight points and four assists. Lushanta Savadel netted 10 points and pulled down eight boards while Nikita Green dished out a game-high seven assists.
Old Westbury shot 27.6 percent (19-58) from the field, 18.8 percent (3-16) from three-point range and 50 percent (6-12) from the free-throw line. Farmingdale State connected on 40.4 percent (23-57) from the floor, 31.3 percent (5-16) from beyond the arc and 71.4 percent (15-21) from the charity stripe. Old Westbury held a 47-33 rebounding advantage, while converting 17 offensive boards into just eight points. Farmingdale State turned 31 Panther miscues into 31 points.
MOUNT SAINT MARY KNIGHTS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the hardwood for a Skyline Conference road battle on Saturday (Dec. 1) afternoon, taking on the Mount Saint Mary Knights in Newburgh New York. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m. from the Kaplan Center.
