BROOKLYN, NY (
www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) –The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team got it going on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor to roll to an 81-70 victory over the Brooklyn Bulldogs, Tuesday from the West Quad Center. With the victory, the Panthers moved to 3-1 as Brooklyn (0-3) lost for the third straight game.
Brooklyn scored the first points of the game 57 seconds in on a three-ball by Maurice Holden.
Josh Hill replied with a pair of free-throw and a lay-up to put Old Westbury up 4-2 with 17:53 remaining in the half. Three more lead changes gave Brooklyn a 7-6 advantage.
Everard Bisnauth answered with a triple, making it a 9-7 game to kick-start a 28-3 Panther run from 16:39 to 6:50 to grab the lead for good. Brooklyn closed out the first-half with a 17-4 run to head into the locker room down 38-29 after 20 minutes.
Old Westbury shot 51.6 percent to control the second-half by outscoring Brooklyn, 43-41. Brooklyn cut the deficit to as close as seven points (54-47) with 9:54 remaining in regulation. Old Westbury countered with a 24-14 scoring run from 9:55 to 1:03. Brooklyn closed out the game with a 9-3 run for the Panthers to win 81-70.
Josh Hill poured in a career-high 26 points (8-12 FG, 10-12 FT) to go along with eight rebounds.
Kerel Mitchell followed with 21 points (9-16 FG), five rebounds and four assists.
Rashawn McCarthy added 15 points, seven rebounds and four assists while
Joshua Bailey posted a career-high 13 points and tied a career-best with seven boards.
Omari Trebuse dished out a personal-best nine assists.
Kavon Baker led Brooklyn with 24 points (10-20 FG), eight assists and two steals while Jeffrey Noel followed with 14 points (5-7 FG) and Steven Grant added 13. Shayne Martinez pulled-down a team-best seven rebounds.
Old Westbury outshot Brooklyn from the field, 51.7 percent (21-60 FG) to 40 percent (28-70 FG), three-point range, 31.6 percent (6-19 3FG) to 18.5 percent (5-27 3FG) and from the free-throw line 76.5 percent (13-17 FT) to 60 percent (9-15 FT). Old Westbury edged Brooklyn in the boards battle, 40-36.
FARMINGDALE STATE RAMS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the hardwood for a Skyline Conference opener on Thursday (Nov. 29) evening, taking on the Farmingdale State Rams in Farmingdale, New York. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. from George E. Nold Hall.
