NEWBURGH, NY (
www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury men's basketball team cruised to a 91-74 Skyline Conference road victory over the Mount Saint Mary Knights, Saturday afternoon from the Kaplan Center. Old Westbury (4-1) wins its fourth straight, improving to 2-0 in conference play while Mount Saint Mary (3-3) dropped to 1-1.
Both teams combined for three ties and five lead changes in a tightly played first-half which saw Old Westbury take a 40-39 edge into the break. Mount Saint Mary went up by as many as six points before Old Westbury responded with a 21-8 run from 11:15 to 2:10 to take a 35-28 lead. Mount Saint Mary closed out the final 1:42 with a 9-3 run.
Old Westbury used a 14-4 run over the opening 4:11 of the second-half to grab a 54-43 lead. Mount Saint Mary chipped away and pulled within 59-56 on a Joe Henain three-pointer with 11:46 remaining. Old Westbury answered with a 19-6 run from 11:12 to 4:57 to go up 78-62 and closed out the final 3:20 with a 13-4 scoring spree.
Tyrik Tucker paced Old Westbury with 20 points (8-of-17 FG), 16 rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks in 39 minutes of action.
Josh Hill poured in a game-high 24 points (11-of-15 FG) to go with eight rebounds while
Kerel Mitchell dropped 22 points (9-of-15 FG) and four assists.
Rashawn McCarthy added 13 points, six rebounds, five assists (season-high) and five steals (career-high).
Joe Henain tallied 20 points (7-of-8 FG), nine rebounds, four blocks and three steals to lead Mount Saint Mary. Joe Stabach followed with 15 points and Donte Howell scored 13 points.
Old Westbury outshot Mount Saint Mary from the field 49.3 percent (37-of-75) to 38.2 percent (26-of-68) and from beyond the arc 42.9 percent (9-of-21) to 27.3 percent (9-of-33). Mount Saint Mary knocked down 81.3 percent (13-of-16) from the free-throw line compared to Old Westbury's 66.7 percent (8-of-12). Old Westbury also held a 46-37 rebounding edge, including turning 14 offensive boards into 22 second chance points. Old Westbury converted 17 Mount Saint Mary miscues into 25 points.
NYU VIOLETS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to the hardwood for a non-conference road battle on Wednesday (Dec. 5) evening, taking on the NYU Violets in New York, New York. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. from Jermone S. Coles Center.
