NYU-Poly held the lead early on over the opening 6:11 until
Denise Zajonc * hit a jumper for Old Westbury's first lead (11-10). NYU-Poly responded with a Margaux Pickell jumper to reclaim the lead. Old Westbury countered with a
Deslyn Applewhaite layup to grab the lead for good with 11:43 remaining in the half. Old Westbury's first-half lead grew to as much as seven and took a 30-25 advantage into the half.
Old Westbury went on a 20-6 scoring spree over the opening 5:50 of the second-half to take a 50-31 lead. Moments later, Old Westbury grabbed a 56-36 lead and extended their advantage to as many as 28 points as
Ruth Vargas dropped in a layup with 1:56 remaining.
Deslyn Applewhaite paced Old Westbury with a game-high 18 points to go along with seven rebounds and two steals.
Denise Zajonc * hit for 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor while
Abigail Williams registered seven points, five rebounds and a career-high five blocks.
Ruth Vargas chipped in with 12 points and two steals.
DeAndra Scott and
Kim Weathers both pulled –down seven rebounds.
Shelby Bruns scored a team-high 13 points to lead NYU-Poly. Bruns added 10 rebounds and three steals while Margaux Pickell posted a double-double, combining 11 points and 15 rebounds.
Old Westbury outshot NYU-Poly the field 47.8 percent (33-69) to 29.6 percent (21-71). Old Westbury connected on 4-of-11 from three-point land while NYU-Poly went 2-of-8. Old Westbury knocked down 6-of-10 from the free-throw line while NYU-Poly went 7-of-15. Old Westbury held a 45-37 rebounding advantage. Old Westbury converted 18 NYU-Poly turnovers into 19 points
YORK CARDINALS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the hardwood for a non-conference matchup on Monday (Feb. 13) when they travel to take on the York Cardinals in Jamaica, New York. Game time is set to tip at 6 p.m.
