www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) –The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team closed out the regular season with a 69-59 Skyline Conference road victory over the St. Joseph's-L.I. Golden Eagles. Old Westbury improves to 18-7 overall and 11-3 in conference play while the Golden Eagle fell to 12-11 and 6-7, respectively.
Old Westbury held an early 3-0 lead and St. Joseph's-L.I. took their lone lead of the game when Amanda Bender's layup put them up 7-5. Moments later, Old Westbury responded with a 19-4 run from 10:37 to 1:42 to go up 30-13. Old Westbury took a 30-19 lead into the half.
St. Joseph's-L.I. put together an 11-5 run to start the second-half to pull within five points, 35-30. Old Westbury quickly built their lead back up to double-digits with a 17-8 run from 16:26 to 10:31, taking a 55-38 lead. St. Joseph's-L.I. pulled within eight points, but were unable to overcome the double-figure deficit.
Deslyn Applewhaite paced Old Westbury with 20 points and 13 boards to register her seventh double-double of the season in addition to nabbing three steals.
Kim Weathers followed with 18 points and five assists while
Denise Zajonc * added 11 points, five steals and four assists.
DeAndra Scott contributed seven points and 10 rebounds while
Antoinette Jolly ripped down eight boards.
Amanda Bender poured in a game-high 23 points to go with 12 rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots for St. Joseph's-L.I. Chelsea Lynch added 11 points and eight rebounds while Nicole Redding had 11 rebounds.
Old Westbury outshot St. Joseph's-L.I. from the field 40.9 percent (27-66) to 27.8 percent (22-79). Old Westbury connected on 6-of-15 from three-point land while St. Joseph's-L.I. hit 7-of-35. Old Westbury knocked down 9-of-20 from the free-throw line while St. Joseph's-L.I. sank 8-of-10. OW also enjoyed a 53-49 rebounding advantage.
SKYLINE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the hardwood for a Skyline Conference Championship Tournament on Thursday (Feb. 23) for the opening round. League officials will announce the complete tournament schedule on Saturday.
