Panthers run at Skyline Conference Championship comes up short, Old Westbury awaits word on an ECAC bid

FARMINGDALE, NY (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) – The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball teams run at the 2011-12 Skyline Conference Championship came short as they fell 69-55 on the road to the second-seeded Farmingdale State on Thursday evening in Farmingdale, New York.  Third-seed Old Westbury fell to 18-8 and will now wait on a bid from the ECAC while Farmingdale State improved to 15-9 and will face top-seeded Mount Saint Mary on Saturday in Newburgh, New York.  

Old Westbury found themselves in a early hole as Farmingdale State jumped out to an early 9-0 lead.  Down 14-5 with 7:19 showing, Old Westbury used a 15-4 run over the next 4:09, capped by a Clarissa Gallagher three-pointer that gave the Panthers a 20-19 advantage, their only lead of the game. Farmingdale State replied with an 8-0 run over the final 2:52 to take a 27-20 lead into the half. 

Old Westbury scored the opening five points of the second-half to pull within two points, making it a 27-25 game with 17:40 left. It wasn't until the 6:05 mark when Farmingdale State took control of the game.  The Rams extended their lead to double-digits for good off a pair of free-throws by Nora Connolly.  Old Westbury's deficit grew to as many as 15 in the second-half and were eliminated from the Skyline Conference Championship Tournament with a 69-55 defeat.

Deslyn Applewhaite pace Old Westbury with 15 points on 7-of-17 shooting to go along with nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals in 26 minutes of court time.  DeAndra Scott posted her fourth double-double of the season, combining 14 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.  Kim Weathers chipped in with eight points and eight rebounds.  Antoinette Jolly nabbed a team-high four steals.

Nora Connolly led the way for Farmingdale State with a game-high 28 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the field in addition to 12 rebounds, seven steals and two blocks.  Nikita Green and Jeanette Zubizarreta scored 12 points apiece while Green tallied six steals and five assists. Dominique Cunningham contributed nine points, 13 rebounds and two blocks. 

Farmingdale State outshot Old Westbury from the field 41.9 percent (26-62 FG) to 30.1 percent (22-73 FG).  Old Westbury hit 6-of-26 from three-point territory while Farmingdale State landed 4-of-19.  Old Westbury also connected on 5-of-8 from the free-throw line as Farmingdale State landed 13-of-22.  Farmingdale State held a 49-43 rebounding advantage, turning 18 offensive boards into 14 second chance points.  Farmingdale State turned 25 Panther turnovers into 25 points.
