www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) –The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team wrapped up their three-game weekend road series Sunday against the Frostburg State Bobcats with a 14-6 victory in Crozet, Virginia. Old Westbury improves to 1-2 on the season while the Bobcats moved to 4-2.
Chris Valerio led the game off with a single and scored two batters later when
Anthony Orsano reached on an error as the Panthers crossed the plate first. Two batters later Orsano scored off a double by
Brian Walsh to give Old Westbury an early 2-0 lead. Old Westbury followed with three more runs in the second.
Tyler Hammett doubled to lead off the second and scored off an error as
Benjamin Farias reached second. Farias went onto score two batters later off an error and Orsano doubled home
Steve Mare to put OW up 5-0. Frostburg State replied with two runs in the third and three more in the fourth to make it a 5-5 game. Old Westbury grabbed the lead for good with a five run fifth inning.
Brian Walsh singled home Mare to give Old Westbury a 6-5 lead and
John Angelino scored on a double steal for the eventual game winning run. Old Westbury tacked on another run in the seventh and three more in the ninth for a season-high 14 run output while Frostburg State added one in the ninth.
Tyler Hammett produced three hits in a 3-for-4 (2B) game at the plate to go along with two runs scored and two stolen bases to lead Old Westbury's offense.
Anthony Orsano (2-5, RBI, 2 R) and
Brian Walsh (2-4, 2 RBI, R) registered multiple hits while
Steve Mare and
Benjamin Farias scored two runs apiece.
The Bobcats were led by Mike Virbickis, who went 1-for-2 at the plate, driving in two runs off a triple in the fourth and finished with two runs scored.
Ryan Bresnahan (1-0) earned Old Westbury's first win of the year after logging six innings of four hit baseball, allowing two earned runs and four walks while striking out two.
Christopher Vitale tossed a scoreless seventh and eighth frames in relief of Bresnahan.
Joe Markiewicz Jr. (0-1) was charged with the loss for Frostburg State after surrendering nine runs (four earned) off seven hits and a free pass. Four Bobcat relievers combined for 4.1 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) off six hits and two walks.
Old Westbury held a 13-6 advantage in hits over Frostburg State, including 5-2 in extra base hits. Frostburg State abandoned seven Bobcats on base and Old Westbury stranded four. Old Westbury swept five bases to Frostburg State's two. Frostburg State recorded eight errors while Old Westbury had four. On the mound, Old Westbury struck out six and handed out five free passes while Frostburg State walked three and fanned eight.
LYNDON STATE, ITHACA, OSWEGO STATE AND SOUTHERN MAINE UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the diamond at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, New York next week for five non-conference games against Lyndon State (Mar. 2, 11 a.m.), Ithaca (Mar. 2, 2 p.m.), Oswego State (Mar. 3, 11 a.m., 2 p.m.) and Southern Maine (Mar. 4, 11 a.m.).
