PANTHER BASEBALL EDGED BY FROSTBURG STATE IN SEASON OPENING TWIN BILL

Anthony Orsano hit a two-run home for Old Westbury's first runs of the 2012 season

Old Westbury outhit Bobcats in both games and will look to bounce back Sunday in the series finale

(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) –The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team opened their 2012 campaign on the road with a doubleheader against the Frostburg State Bobcats (4-1) on Saturday afternoon in Crozet, Virginia.  Frostburg State edged Old Westbury (0-2) 8-6 in the opener and 6-4 in game two.

Old Westbury broke the scoring ice in game one in the first inning when Anthony Orsano clubbed a two-run homer to score Paul Valerio.  Frostburg State replied in the bottom of the first with a John Barrett two-run double and a grounder Doug Anuszewski to put the Bobcats ahead, 3-2.  Steve Mare knocked in Blake Barbeito in the top of the third off a grounder to knot the game at 3-3.  Frostburg State tacked on two more runs in the third as Barrett smacked an RBI triple followed by a Anuszewski sacrifice fly.  Two more Bobcats scored in the fifth off a sacrifice fly and an error to take a 7-3 lead.  Following back-to-back singles in the sixth by Brian Walsh and Chris DeGennaro, Brian Reutter drove home Walsh on a pinch hit single.  Two batters later, Barbeito singled to center to drive in DeGennaro and Reutter to make it a 7-6 game.  Frostburg State added an insurance run in the sixth and held on for an 8-6 victory.

Three Panthers registered multiple hits led by Brian Walsh's 3-for-4 performance at the plate.  Walsh, Chris DeGennaro (2-3, R) and Paul Valerio (2-4, R) each swept one base while Anthony Orsano (1-4, 2 RBI, R) and Blake Barbeito (1-3, 2 RBI, R) each drove in a pair of runs.   

John Barrett paced Frostburg State offensively, going 2-for-2 with the bat, including three RBI and scoring three runs.  Doug Anuszewski drove in four runs and Pat Sapp scored three times.

Tim Walsh (0-1) was tagged with the loss, surrendering five runs off five hits and two walks over four innings with three strikeouts.  Frank DiMaria fanned two batters in one inning of relief. 

Zach O'Dell (2-0) picked up the victory by working 5.1 innings, giving up six runs (five earned) off 10 hits while striking out four.  AJ Rosenthal struck out two in a scoreless 1.2 innings of relief to notch his second save of the season.

Old Westbury held the advantage in hits, 12-7, while Frostburg State had a 4-3 edge in extra base hits.  Frostburg State left six runners on base as five Panthers were stranded on the base path.  Old Westbury swept three bags to Frostburg State's one.  Both team committed one error.  On the mound, Old Westbury struck out five and walked six while Frostburg State registered six strikeouts without issuing a walk.   

In game two, Old Westbury jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as John Angelino singled home Anthony Orsano from second.  Frostburg State took a 2-1 lead at the end of two after scoring on a wild pitch and a grounder.  John Angelino tied the game at 2-2 in the third with a double that scored Steve Mare from first.  Old Westbury grabbed a 4-2 lead in the fourth when Brian Reutter and Blake Barbeito scored on an error and a Paul Valerio single.  The Bobcats added a run in the fourth before scoring the go ahead runs off Jonathan Costa and Stephen Chapter, including a pair of errors in the sixth to steal a come from behind victory from the Panthers.

John Angelino paced Old Westbury while three hits and two RBI while Steve Mare and Brian Walsh both registered a pair of hits.  Paul Valerio went 1-for-3, driving in one run and stealing a pair of bases. 

Jon Keeler led Frostburg State with a 2-for-2 game at the plate.  T Hawthorne jacked a fourth inning solo homer and scored two runs.

Chris Sanabria earned a no decision as Old Westbury's starter, going four innings, allowing three runs off four hits and four walks while striking out four.  Jonathan Costa fanned three in one inning of work and surrendered two runs off three walks.  Stephen Chapter (0-1) suffered the loss after striking out two and gave up the game-winning unearned run.

Frostburg State's Doug Politz pitched five innings, but did not factor into the decision as David O'Brien (0-1) grabbed his first win of the season and AJ Rosenthal saved this third game

Old Westbury once again outhit Frostburg State, 8-4, while Frostburg State held a 2-1 edge in extra base hits.  Old Westbury left eight runners on base and Frostburg State stranded six.  Old Westbury swept five bases to Frostburg State's three.  Frostburg State recorded four errors while Old Westbury had three.  On the mound, Old Westbury struck out nine and handed out seven free passes while Frostburg State walked four and fanned two. 
 
FROSTBURG STATE BOBCATS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: The Panthers return to the diamond for the three-game series finale on Sunday (Feb. 26) on the road against the Frostburg State Bobcats.  First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. in Crozet, Virginia.
