OLD WESTBURY, NY (
www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) –The SUNY College at Old Westbury women's basketball team defeated the Purchase Panthers 71-46 in Skyline Conference action at home on Tuesday evening from the Clark Athletic Center. Old Westbury improves to 15-7 on the season and 9-3 against the conference while sending Purchase to 7-14 and 0-11, respectively.
Purchase opened the game with a 3-0 lead, their lone advantage of the game. Old Westbury replied with a 16-5 run from 19:01 to 12:33 to take an 18-8 lead. Purchase brought the deficit down to five, until Old Westbury used a 9-2 run to close out the final 5:13 of the opening half to take a 33-21 margin into the break.
Old Westbury held a double-digit advantage the entire second-half, extending their lead to 21 points at 9:47 with a
Kim Weathers layup to give her team a 54-33 lead.
Re'auna Dorner closed out the game with a jumper to give Old Westbury a 25 point cushion, their largest lead of the game.
Deslyn Applewhaite's 14 points led all Old Westbury scorers for the 10th time this season. Applewhaite shot 7-of-14 from the floor to go along with eight rebounds.
Kim Weathers followed wtih 11 points, four assists and three steals off the bench while
Clarissa Gallagher tallied 10 points.
Denise Zajonc * pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds to go with four steals.
DeAndra Scott had nine rebounds and
Ruth Vargas contributed eight rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
Alyssa Guido scored 13 points and Jess Lindsay scored 10 and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Purchase. Christina Rupp grabbed 10 rebounds and Jalisa Fields added eight off the offensive glass.
Old Westbury outshot Purchase from the field 37.8 percent (29-76) to 19.5 percent (15-70). Old Westbury connected on 4-of-19 from three-point land while Purchase went 3-of-12. Old Westbury knocked down 9-of-17 from the free-throw line while Purchase went 13-of-24. Old Westbury held a 55-46 rebounding advantage. Old Westbury converted 25 Purchase turnovers into 20 points
